Icon Internships, Paper Conservation National Library of Scotland 9 months Internship starting October / November 2018 Location: George IV Bridge, Edinburgh EH1 1EW Educational Stipend: £12,750
This conservation internship is part of a programme of Alexander Graham Traineeships at the National Library of Scotland, and is being managed in partnership with the Institute of Conservation. It is intended that the internship will focus upon the conservation of some particularly unstable types of paper objects, such as newspapers. This is a priority because the Library has a large and significant collection of newspapers, many of which are beginning to deteriorate. A strategy is therefore urgently needed to decide how to conserve them, to plan their digitisation where appropriate and to take preventive measures to ensure their long-term preservation. The project will involve a research component, as there are a number of options available for the remedial and preventive conservation of newspapers and other acidic paper collections, and we would like to investigate these options and research the approaches being taken by other major libraries to establish a strategy for caring for our acidic paper collections. Following on from this, we anticipate implementing measures including a large-scale treatment programme. The project will also involve advising on the methodology used to digitise the Library's newspapers, again with reference to good practice elsewhere. The Library has a Conservation Unit based in a recently refurbished workshop in the Library's George IV Bridge building. The intern will be expected to participate fully in the activities of the Unit, for example by attending team meetings and training events, by assisting with outreach activities such as tours of the conservation workshop and volunteer programmes, and by taking a turn in the Duty Conservator rota. The intern will also be expected to produce quarterly reports and regular updates on social media about their internship. The internship will last for 9 months, and will start around October/November 2018, depending on the availability of the intern. It will be based in central Edinburgh, primarily at the George IV Bridge building but with some time spent in the Causwayside building where many of the newspapers are stored. The educational stipend for the internship is £12,750, which will be paid in three instalments. In addition to this stipend the Library will provide some funding for the intern to attend relevant conservation workshops and seminars, or to make study visits.
