Role Description

The Borthwick Institute of Archives is seeking an experienced Conservator
with a track record of working with a range of archival materials,
especially paper, parchment and bindings to undertake conservation
activities at the University of York.
You will significantly contribute to the Borthwick’s mission of making
archives available for research to all people, now and in the future by
making archives more widely accessible. You will undertake preventive and
interventive conservation measures in line with agreed prioritisation
methodologies and workflows; manage and implement pest management
strategies and environmental monitoring methodologies; work with
stakeholders and in-house teams to facilitate temporary and long-term
exhibitions; support and facilitate research using our archives, and
develop systems and methodologies for good collections management.
You will be responsible for environmental monitoring, analysis and acting
upon this, helping to open up items in our probate archive to external
customers, delivering on the results of a recent conservation
prioritisation project, supporting the work of the Conservation Manager,
providing advice and guidance to users and stakeholders; facilitating loans
and internal exhibitions, working with our archivists to ensure and promote
collections care; and overseeing the development and delivery of our
disaster planning work.
You should hold a recognised qualification in archive conservation and have
excellent IT skills. You will be responsible for providing collections care
advice and guidance to colleagues and archive users. You should be
self-motivated, able to work individually and as part of an enthusiastic
and lively small team, as well as having the ability to prioritise and work
to challenging and evolving deadlines.
The role is full time, Monday to Friday, and is available on a fixed term
(maternity cover) contract from October 2018 for up to 12 months. The
Information Services Directorate operates a flexi-time scheme which allows
for flexible working whilst ensuring operational requirements are fulfilled.
The closing date for applications is 14 September 2018 and it is
anticipated that interviews will be held on 2 October 2018. For queries
about the role, please contact [email protected]

The University is committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive community
– a place where we can all be ourselves and succeed on merit. We offer a
range of family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working
arrangements, staff engagement forums, campus facilities and services to
support staff from different backgrounds.
