Wood Identification Class at the Mystic Seaport
What wood is it and why? Seeing and understanding wood in a whole new way.
October 27-28, 2018 (Saturday 9.00am-4.00pm, Sunday 11:00 - 4:00)
MYSTIC, CONN - Did you ever look at a piece of wood and wonder what wood it
is? And why it looks the way it does? Were you ever confused about which
wood it is: mahogany, walnut, cherry, or poplar?
This two-day hands-on workshop taught by Randy Wilkinson of Fallon &
Wilkinson, LLC will answer all these questions and more. It is designed
specifically for curators, conservators, collectors, antique dealers,
appraisers, and woodworkers. The goal of this workshop is to familiarize
students with the physical properties of wood and enable them to recognize
species-specific cell structures.
On Saturday, basic wood anatomy will be introduced, including grain, figure,
fundamental differences between softwoods and hardwoods, and more. The
student will learn to identify 19 common woods that are used in American
decorative arts using a 10x loupe.
On Sunday, we will be using the collection of the Mystic Seaport Museum to
identifying wood once it is made into an object. Students will get the rare
opportunity to see some of the great treasures the Mystic Seaport has to
offer while learning to identify wood on site.
Fallon & Wilkinson, LLC is a furniture conservation firm founded in 2000 by
principal conservators, Tad D. Fallon and Randy S. Wilkinson. Both were
trained at the Smithsonian Institution's prestigious Furniture Conservation
Training Program and completed conservation fellowships at the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, the Preservation Society of Newport County, and the Mystic
Seaport Museum, respectively.
No experience is necessary. Class fee of $395.00 includes a hardwood sample
kit, 10x loupe, book (Identifying Wood ) and Saturday lunch. A 10% discount
is offered to students, senior citizens, IWCS members, and prior Fallon &
Wilkinson students. Class size is limited to 15 students. This class will
fill quickly, so sign up soon.
The class will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2018 from 9.00am-4.00pm and
Sunday, October 28th from 11.00am-4.00pm at the Mystic Seaport Museum.
