Conservation Technician, University of Washington Libraries



Duties

Works in a team environment providing conservation and preservation service=
s for University of Washington Libraries system.  Under general supervision=
 of Conservation Manager, provides basic to complex conservation treatment =
and housing for paper-based library collections.  Provides support for comm=
ercial binding and marking activities under general supervision of the Pres=
ervation Supervisor. Under the guidance of unit staff and policy, evaluates=
 library materials that have been selected for binding, repair or housing: =
identify and assess treatment options.



Support for Conservation

Performs basic to complex binding repair for library materials.

Constructs protective enclosures such as drop spine boxes, four-flap wrappe=
rs, pockets, polyester encapsulation, and custom-designed boxes. Measures i=
tems for commercially made custom sized boxes.

Constructs bindings in various styles and materials, including pamphlet bin=
dings, case bindings, and post bindings.

Prepares damaged textblocks prior to be sent for library binding: including=
 textblock consolidation, and page replacement.

Surface cleans and repairs maps, prints, and other unbound materials. Humid=
ifies and flattens rolled or folded flat materials.

Prepares library materials for scanning, photocopying, microfilming, and ot=
her means of reproduction.

May assist in exhibit preparation and installation.



Support for Commercial Binding and Marking

Assists Preservation Supervisor with pulling, receiving, preparing, shippin=
g, and quality control of materials for binding.

Determines most desirable binding method and provides spine information and=
 other instructions for the bindery in the ABLE binding database.

Prepares materials for binding, establishes and updates records in binding =
and cataloging databases, and resolves complex problems associated with the=
se processes in consultation with the Preservation Supervisor.  Maintains r=
ecords in Library Management System (LMS).  Refers problems as appropriate.

As assigned, constructs and runs queries in LMS to identify materials for b=
inding and/or rush processing. Locates and rush processes requested materia=
ls.

Directs student assistants responsible for marking and binding preparation =
as needed in the absence of the Preservation Supervisor and Preservation Sp=
ecialist.

Assists with the downloading and archiving of environmental data from datal=
oggers.

Assists with the salvage of library materials damaged by water, mold, fire,=
 or other disasters.



General

Communicates appropriately, effectively and positively. Plays an active rol=
e in staying informed and participating in Libraries and unit meetings, act=
ivities and events.

Responds to telephone and email inquiries from Libraries=92 service units o=
r the public as appropriate.

Assists with preparation and quality control of preservation replacement sh=
ipments as needed.

Assists with other preservation projects and services as needed.

Other duties as assigned.

Requirements


High school graduation or equivalent AND three years of applicable library =
technical experience, including one year beyond the entry level OR equivale=
nt education/experience.

Demonstrable book repair or hand bookbinding experience.

Experience and sensibility in the safe handling of book and paper materials.

Excellent manual dexterity and sustained concentration with delicate and/or=
 repetitive tasks.

Ability to work collaboratively as well as individually to support departme=
nt and institutional goals. Excellent communication and interpersonal skill=
s.

Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the contributions=
 a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate p=
reservation workflows and processes to a diverse group of student employees=
 and staff.

Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to document a=
nd explain procedures in an online environment.

Desired


Experience working in preservation or conservation, particularly in an acad=
emic library.

Knowledge of historical to contemporary techniques and materials of bookbin=
ding and papermaking. Understanding of the physical properties of book, pap=
er, and graphic materials.

Demonstrated understanding of principles and ethics of conservation treatme=
nt.

Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, to =
plan, coordinate, and implement effective projects.




Conditions of Employment

Work schedule must be Monday-Friday, between 8:00am and 5:00pm.

May need to wear an N-95 respirator for occasional work with mold-damaged m=
aterials.

At times, may need to work outside of regular Monday-Friday (9am-5pm) hours=
 to support the recovery of damaged collections or to meet other deadlines.
