ARCHIVE CONSERVATOR (NEWBURY CHURCHWARDENS) Fixed-term contract for 15 weeks £21074-£25463 (qualified applicants will be appointed on SCP25, £23111) REF: CUL0241
Berkshire Record Office is looking for a qualified book and paper conservator to undertake repairs to two volumes of churchwardens' accounts for the parish of St Nicolas, Newbury. The volumes span 1602-1726 and 1725-1795. The post has been funded by the Sabina Sutherland Charitable Trust and is designed to provide a developmental opportunity for an early-career conservator. Applications are invited from candidates who are either newly-qualified or who have qualified within the last three years. St Nicolas is the ancient parish church in Newbury and is a Grade I listed building. The accounts include much about the fabric of the church and parish welfare. Of wider significance are burial costs for soldiers after the Civil War battles of Newbury. Each book consists of around 320 pages of handmade paper, sewn with a linen thread onto raised cords and then bound in brown reverse calf. There are tooled decorations on the front and rear boards as well as the spine. Treatments will include paper and leather repair, iron gall ink consolidation and book resewing. If you would like an informal discussion about the post please contact Sue Hourigan, Senior Conservator on +44(0)118 937 5135 (email [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>).
