Overview:

With support from the Getty Foundation’s Conserving Canvas Initiative, the
Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg (SRAL) will host and organise a two-phase
workshop to provide instruction and hands-on experience on the ‘Mist-Lining’
technique.

The ‘Mist-Lining' technique has many advantages over traditional lining
systems. It uses an acrylic resin sprayed to an auxiliary textile support, to
create an open adhesive network that can be regenerated from the dry-state.
Solvent vapours or gentle heat can be used to swell or tackify the adhesive.
Bonding occurs under light pressure without the use of excessive heat or
moisture. The system can be classified as a cold-lining system forming a
nap-bond. The lining adhesive remains sandwiched between the two canvases with
no impregnation of the original textile or decorative layers. which aids
reversibility. The technique has been used by SRAL very successfully for lining
large-scale paintings, paintings previously lined with wax-resin or glue-paste
adhesives, as well as smaller easel paintings. It has also been used to provide
structural support to art works on paper and for unpainted textiles.

This two-phase, three-week workshop will disseminate this technique to a wider
professional audience. Selected trainees will receive funding for travel and
accommodation. The SRAL instructors will be Jos van Och (Head of Studios), Kate
Seymour (Head of Education), Gwendoline R. Fife (Senior Paintings Conservator)
and Stijn Lenaerts (Conservator). A number of guest experts will be invited to
share their experiences with the Mist-Lining technique through lectures, case
studies and discussions.

Programme:

Phase 1 consists of a plenary five-day, hands-on session providing an overview
of the 'Mist-Lining' technique and the step-by-step processes involved. This
phase is open to 16 mid-career trainees. This will ensure in-depth knowledge
and foster a deeper understanding of this conservation practice. This session
will stimulate the formation of a collaborative network of instructors,
specialists, experts and trainees.

Phase 2 consists of a practical sessions lasting two-weeks. The 16 trainees
from Phase 1 will be divided into four groups and allocated time-slots
(Sessions A-D). Each group will carry out the structural treatment of an
appropriate canvas painting using the 'Mist Lining' technique. Case studies may
be chosen from the trainee’s own collection, however SRAL has at our
disposition a wide selection of canvas paintings that can be utilised. These
range from deaccessioned paintings from the sixteenth-to-eighteenth century, to
modern and contemporary canvases.
