Ninth MaSC Workshop and Meeting
Canadian Conservation Institute, Parks Canada, and National Gallery of Canada,
Ottawa
3-7 June 2019
Announcement and Call for Papers

The 9th Workshop and Meeting of the Users’ Group for Mass Spectrometry and
Chromatography (MaSC) will take place in Ottawa, Canada, from Monday 3rd –
Friday 7th June 2019. The workshop, hosted jointly by the Canadian Conservation
Institute (CCI) and Parks Canada, will take place on 3-5 June. The meeting will
be held at the National Gallery of Canada on 6-7 June.

Workshop, 3-5 June 2019:

The two-and-a-half-day workshop will provide a unique opportunity for
participants to experience several novel sample preparation and derivatization
methods for diverse GCMS applications: pyrolysis of natural resins, dye
analysis, and evolved gas analysis for the evaluation of museum exhibition and
storage materials. The use of the Thermal Separation Probe (TSP) for thermal
desorption and “slow pyrolysis”, performed directly in the GC inlet, will be
introduced. Workshops will be conducted by Jennifer Poulin (CCI) and Greg Smith
(Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields). The workshop sessions will include
lectures, demonstrations and hands-on training on the instrumentation using
samples prepared by the instructors.

The workshop will begin with a welcome/orientation session the afternoon of 3
June at CCI. Practical workshop sessions will take place on 4-5 June at the
laboratories of CCI and Parks Canada (these are located a short drive from
downtown Ottawa; transportation will be provided).

The workshop will be limited to 15 participants owing to laboratory space
constraints. Those wishing to attend are requested to submit a short paragraph
describing their experience with GCMS and how they would benefit from the
workshop, which should be included in the registration form (see below) and
sent to [email protected] before 7 January 2019.

The registration fee for the workshop is 500 CAD.

Meeting, 6-7 June 2019:

The meeting will be held at the National Gallery of Canada and will comprise
discussions and presentations on novel applications of chromatographic and mass
spectrometric techniques to the study of art and cultural artefacts.
Presentations of studies related to the workshop themes are encouraged, but
contributions on a broad range of topics are welcome. We hope to create an
informal atmosphere for the exchange of ideas, and so discussions of work in
progress are welcomed.

Those interested in presenting a paper or poster should submit an abstract of
up to 200 words to [email protected] before 7 January 2019.

The registration fee for the meeting is 250 CAD for those who register before 7
March 2019, or 300 CAD after this deadline. The registration fee for students
is 100 CAD.

Details of the workshop and meeting and a registration form can be found on the
MaSC website,
https://mascgroup.org/workshops-meetings/2019-workshop-and-meeting/. Questions
can be addressed to the local organiser, Jennifer Poulin, and the MaSC
committee at [email protected].
