MASTER'S PROGRAMME IN CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF
AMSTERDAM

Application is now open for the 2019 - 2021 Master's programme in the
Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage (Conservation Studies) at the
University of Amsterdam (the Netherlands).

Applications will be accepted until JANUARY 31st 2019.

The English-language Master's programme has nine specialisations in
conservation and restoration and one in technical art history that are offered
on alternate years. For the coming academic year, beginning is September 2019,
the following specialisations are offered:

Textiles
Glass and Ceramics
Paintings
Contemporary Art
Technical Art History

Training in the conservation and restoration of cultural heritage in Amsterdam
is organised in two phases. The Master programme in Conservation Studies
provides an introduction to the broader field of conservation and restoration
of cultural heritage providing skills that enable the graduate to effectively
communicate with professionals in the field and develop skills in the
application of relevant scientific research, notably with regard to his/her
chosen field of specialisation.

Once the Master's diploma has been obtained, graduates apply for the two-year
Post-Master's training phase for which a stipend is provided. In this course
the graduates are able to develop their skills and research abilities through
experience with complex individual restoration assignments, specialist courses
and workshops, individual research projects and ten months of internships. On
completion of the post-Master training graduates are in a position to work
independently as conservation-restoration professionals.

A Dutch-language minor course is offered at the University of Amsterdam which
fulfils the part of the selection relating to preventive conservation, art
history and organic chemistry. Students who have not followed this course have
to prove knowledge of these subjects either by having completed another
conservation course or through self-study of literature which they receive on
application. The selection process for all candidates combines interviews,
portfolio reviews and a demonstration of skills deemed necessary to enrol in
the study.
