David Stein & Co is seeking a talented and motivated Senior Paintings 
Conservator to join the team in Sydney.
 
About us:
David Stein & Co has a strong reputation for quality and service in the 
conservation of paintings. Founded in 1991, the studio is the largest private 
conservation practice specialising in Paintings Conservation in Australia and 
the Asia Pacific region. We have a comprehensive knowledge of all periods of 
Australian art, with a unique understanding of the types of condition problems 
that arise with particular artists’ works. David Stein & Co has become the 
trusted partner of some of Australia’s most prestigious institutions and 
collectors, and has a reputation for commitment to the care of art.
 
The position:
The Senior Paintings Conservator is responsible for carrying out high quality 
conservation assessment and treatment of paintings on canvas and board, and a 
range of contemporary materials. Knowledge of the most current methodologies 
for cleaning, varnishing and retouching is essential. Experience with complex 
structural treatments and linings considered an advantage.
 
The Senior Conservator will be part of a small team dedicated to excellence in 
conservation. The Senior Conservator will build relationships with our clients 
to deliver the best outcome for the care, conservation and display of their 
artworks. They will contribute to the management and continued improvement of 
practices within the studio.
 
Essential:
The successful applicant will have:
- A tertiary qualification in conservation, specialising in paintings.
- At least 10 years’ experience working in conservation, including at least 2 
years in the private sector.
- The ability to work both independently and as an integral part of a team.
- The ability to guide and supervise junior conservators.
- Digital skills including digital photography, report writing, and use of 
databases such as FileMaker.
 
Preferred:
- Professional Membership of Australian Institute for the Conservation of 
Cultural Material (AICCM).
- Analytical skills, including FTIR, XRF and infrared analysis of paintings and 
material samples.
- A passion for art, with particular interest and knowledge of Australian 
artists.
 
Salary will be commensurate with experience.
