The Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in Textile and Costume Conservation

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco is offering a two-year advanced
postgraduate fellowship in the conservation of textiles beginning in
September of 2019.

FAMSF is comprised of two museums, the deYoung and the Legion of Honor.
The Caroline and H. McCoy Jones Department of Textile Arts contains
approximately 15,000 textiles and costumes, from 125 countries and spanning
approximately 3 millenia. The collection has particular strengths in
20th-century couture, pre-19th century monumental European tapestry, and
pile and flat-woven carpets and textiles.

The Fellow will work under the supervision of the head of textile
conservation and collaboratively with curators and other conservators to
gain experience in all aspects of conservation encountered in a large
museum setting, including activities related to treatment, exhibition,
installation, loans, preventive care, documentation, and public programs.
A significant part of the Fellowship is developing and carrying out a
research project. Publication and presentation of the Fellow's research is
expected.

The selected candidate will receive annual compensation of $50,000 for the
first year and $52,000 for the second year, substantial funds for travel
and research support, plus a full benefits package. Candidates should be
graduates of a conservation training program. Research experience is
desirable.

Candidates are asked to submit a letter of interest and resume, and to
