Assistant Conservator Contract Position

An assistant conservator is sought for an IMLS-funded project in the Museums of 
New Mexico (MNM) Conservation Unit in Santa Fe, NM. The MNM Conservation Unit 
serves four state museums and seven historic sites; the IMLS project is to 
conserve historic collections at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture namely, 
Western and Jicarilla Apache baskets, Navajo silverwork, and Maria Martinez 
legacy collections consisting mainly of Pueblo pottery. The project will be 
collaborative with curators, scholars, cultural leaders, Apache basket weavers, 
Navajo jewelers (silver) and Pueblo potters. The project will include visits 
with artists both in the museum and in communities. In addition, the assistant 
conservator will be encouraged to attend relevant lectures, programs, arts 
demonstrations and cultural events offered in various Santa Fe venues and in 
nearby communities. Although treatment oriented, the assistant conservator 
position will include some project administration and possibly a research 
component. Resources include an extensive Southwest studies library and archive 
as well as instrumentation available in the Conservation Unit including FTIR, 
pXRF, multi-spectral imaging, photogrammetry and various other technologies.

The position is a full-time contract for 12-14 months, ideally beginning 
spring, 2019.
