PATRICK BATY WILL TALK ON 'THE QUEST FOR COLOUR STANDARDS IN 20TH CENTURY
BRITAIN'

The Robing Room at Freemason's Hall,

60 Great Queen Street

WC2B 5AZ. London

United Kingdom

The background for the British Standards for Paint colours developed in
1955 and 1972 developed out of needs recognised in the 19th century and
that became more pressing in the 20th century. The talk will trace that
development that grew from the aim that a client could specify a colour by
name and the decorator could order it, knowing it would be the required
colour. Although these standards are largely for use in architectural and
building settings they influence the way paint colour is seen in fields
beyond architecture and building, not least because household paints have
become standard materials in the creation of fine art works.

Patrick is interested in the decoration of historic buildings. His work
covers research, paint analysis, colour & technical advice and colour
surveys. Projects have ranged from King Henry VIII’s heraldic Beasts;
Baroque churches; country houses; wartime RAF stations and London social
housing estates to structures such as Tower Bridge and Holborn Viaduct. He
also works in the USA. Thames & Hudson have recently published Patrick’s
first book ‘The Anatomy of Colour’.
