Advancing Leadership in Conservation through Communication May 13, 2019

Offsite workshop at The Metropolitan Museum of Art for AIC's 47th Annual
Meeting (registration is also open to those not attending the AIC meeting)
Co-organizers: Francesca Casadio (Art Institute of Chicago) and Tiarna
Doherty (independent)

Following a series on authentic leadership and surfacing one's values as a
leader at the AIC meeting in Chicago in 2017; and a workshop on the science
of motivation and effecting change in Houston in 2018, we are pleased to
announce the 2019 Advancing Leadership in Conservation workshop to be held
at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The event consists of two parts as detailed below.

1) Advancing Leadership in Conservation: Introduction to the Programs at
the Getty Leadership Institute and Center for Curatorial Leadership

Department Head Luncheon 11:00 am–12:30 pm

Learn about opportunities for advanced leadership development for
conservation and other museum professionals.
Melody Kanschat, Executive Director, Getty Leadership Institute and
Sarah Van Anden, Senior Programs Manager, Center for Curatorial Leadership

2) Advancing Leadership in Conservation through Communication
Workshop 1:00 pm–5:00 pm

This workshop is targeted to conservators at all stages of their career.
The objective is to help participants attain a greater awareness of
successful communication strategies when promoting subjects related to the
field of conservation. The first part of the workshop is focused on
communications and media. The second part is about crafting the “elevator
pitch” (a brief, persuasive speech that could be delivered on an elevator
ride).

Metropolitan Museum Senior Publicist Egle Žygas, and The Wall Street
Journal's Brenda Cronin, who covers arts and culture, will present their
perspectives on how to best communicate conservation content for general
audiences. Topics covered in the presentations will include: what
journalists are looking for in reporting conservation-related stories and
how institutions establish communications priorities. Ample time for
discussion with the speakers will allow participants to learn more about
how institutions and conservators in private practice can receive media
coverage for the work they do.

Melody Kanschat of the Getty Leadership Institute will then lead a hands-on
workshop on shaping the “elevator pitch.” Strategies and tips for how to
present ideas to colleagues, senior staff, and potential donors and
sponsors will be discussed.

Registration is now open through the portal of the annual meeting (
https://www.culturalheritage.org/events/annual-meeting/current-meeting/workshops).
The program is listed under the May 13 workshops and events. The workshop
is open to conservators at all stages of their career and is available to
both attendees of the AIC annual meeting, but can also be purchased as a
standalone workshop by those not attending the meeting
Cost: $89 for AIC meeting attendees; $139 for non –AIC meeting attendees
