In reply to Luz Vanasco´s enquiry, I don't know of any examples in the UK but
when I was working at the QVMAG in Tasmania, Australia, we had an exhibition
fully dedicated to painted photographs since they had a large collection of
them, and the research done around it was published in the catalogue 'The
painted portrait photograph in Tasmania 1850-1900' by John McPhee in 2007.
Later in 2016 we also treated a very damaged painted photograph mounted on a
canvas and we published a paper about it which you might find of interest since
includes some background research about the technique, the publication is:
Robin Tait & Mar Gomez Lobon (2016) The conservation treatment and visual
reintegration of a major repair of a painted portrait photograph of the
Reverend William Henry Browne, AICCM Bulletin, 37:2, 87-95
Feel free to contact me directly for more information, and good luck with your
research.
Regards,
Mar Gomez Lobon
