M+ is a museum dedicated to collecting, exhibiting, and interpreting visual art, design and architecture, moving image, and Hong Kong visual culture of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. As part of the development of the team we are aiming to create a substantial Conservation team that will deal with the preventative and remedial conservation of the growing M+ Collection. The team will encompass various disciplines amongst which painting, objects, paper, photography, art installation and time-based media. A small temporary conservation lab has been set up to perform basic remedial treatments for the collection before using the state-of-the-art conservation labs scheduled to be completed in 2020. For more information about the M+ collection, team and building development, please go to: http://enews.westkowloon.hk/career/conservators.pdf Associate Conservator, Paper (Ref: 18396) Reporting to Conservator, Paper, you will be an integral part of a growing conservation team responsible to set up guidelines for the adequate development of preservation and conservation activities within M+ for one of the leading collections on contemporary visual culture in the world. As M+ building is yet to be opened, current conservation tasks are mainly focused on preventive conservation and care of the collections in storage and on basic remedial treatment, understanding that capacity to perform higher level of treatment sophistication and complexity will grow once permanent conservation labs are available for use. You will be responsible for: •contributing to the preservation of the M+ collections by participating in a wide range of traditional conservation activities such as producing condition reports and treatment proposals which include thorough documentation, providing expert opinions on the condition of proposed acquisitions, acquisitions and works planned for loans and exhibitions. It will involve performing occasional courier duties; •performing conservation treatments and producing reports according to ethical standards; •working in a collaborative manner in preparation/production/installation/de-installation of temporary and permanent exhibitions; •conducting basic environmental measurements, monitoring and ensuring preventive maintenance necessary for the paper-based collections; •participating in the matting/framing programme of the paper-based collections using proper materials and techniques; •collaborating in extended conservation/preservation efforts such as developing guidelines for storage and display, best practices for conservation treatment, procedure and the proper care and handling of works on paper in the collections; •participating in advising and training staff in best practices for the care, handling, display, storage, packing and shipping of paper-based collections and collaborating to ensuring that all conservation related elements are considered to the highest possible standard; •keeping current state-of-the-art conservation/preservation methods and techniques by reading relevant literature and attending presentations, seminars or training; •conducting specialised research on the materials and techniques of artists represented in the collection and possibly investigating degradation processes, treatment options and efficacy of treatments, when time and circumstances permit; •communicating on conservation topics, if possible reporting on research results through publications or presentations at professional gatherings, in agreement with the supervisors; and •co-supervising conservation technicians, volunteers or interns as required. You should: •possess a Master’s degree or a diploma from a recognised conservation training programme with a specialisation in paper-based collection; •have at least 2 years of practical postgraduate experience working on paper conservation preferably in an institutional/museum setting; knowledge in traditional mounting techniques and materials developed in South East Asia or in basic care of traditional and contemporary photographic collections would be an advantage; •have proven experience treating and documenting a wide range of works to a high standard with full consideration of practical and ethical issues; •demonstrate general knowledge of current museum practices in storage, handling and environmental controls; •be knowledgeable/interested in modern and contemporary art, architecture and design, photography and film preservation, including materials and techniques, and demonstrate expertise in diverse conservation techniques and theories (familiarity and experience with cultural materials in South East Asia would be an advantage); •be an innovative and enthusiastic team player with strong critical thinking and solid analytical and applied problem-solving skills; •be able to work independently under limited supervision and as part of a team, in a fast-paced and continuously challenging environment; •be proficient in MS Windows and/or Apple OS platform; and •have strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills in English and preferably in Chinese.
