All members are warmly invited to join us for the Icon Book and Paper Group
AGM 2019. The AGM will be followed by a lightning talk session featuring
students and emerging professionals. The event will end with a panel
discussion featuring Fiona Macalister ACR FIIC, Lt Col Tim Purbrick and Dr
Emma Cunliffe to discuss their work in the protection of cultural heritage
in areas affected by natural disaster and conflict. The panel discussion
will be chaired by Lara Artemis ACR. Biographies of the panel participants
can be found at the bottom of this announcement. The afternoon will
conclude with a drinks reception.

Panel discussion:

“Humanity’s common past and the foundation of its shared future”: The
protection of cultural heritage in areas in crisis

As climate change continues to show its impact through extreme weather
events, how can our cultural heritage institutions here in the UK be better
prepared for unforeseen natural disasters?

What can we do as individuals to help others who are working to protect
cultural property which is currently at risk abroad?

What education and training is available in these areas?


About the speakers

Dr Emma Cunliffe is a member of Blue Shield International, and the
Secretary of UK Blue Shield. Her background is in the use of satellite
imagery in damage assessment in the middle east, and in understanding
motivations for cultural property damage and protection methods in armed
conflict. She is a Research Associate with the Cultural Property Protection
and Peace team at Newcastle University, and has worked as a consultant for
UNITAR-UNOSAT, analysing damage to Syria's World Heritage sites.

Lt Col Tim Purbrick is the Commander of the Cultural Property Protection
Unit, which has been established with 15 posts in the British Army
following the ratification by Parliament of the Hague Convention (1954) in
2017.

Fiona Macalister ACR FIIC is an independent Preventive Conservator, with a
keen interest in training in emergency preparedness; networks and
multidisciplinary collaboration. An archaeological conservator at seasonal
sites in the Middle East, 1983 – 2001, with many years’ experience of
working in, and with, national, independent and university museums,
historic house owners and heritage organisations, including archives. Fiona
is an expert member of ICOMOS-ICORP (International Committee for Risk
Preparedness) and a board member of UK Blue Shield. She delivers training
in the assessment of collections post conflict for the British Museum Iraqi
Archaeologists Training Programme.


About the chair

Lara Artemis ACR has been an accredited book and paper conservator since
2003. She has recently taken up a position as the Senior Conservator at
Lambeth Palace overseeing the conservation and preservation of the library
and archive collections for the Church of England. She manages Collections
Care workflow requirements for a small team of conservators and
preservation assistants, who prioritise and plan preservation projects
across the Palace estate. Her priority at the moment is to collection
migration plan the move to the new Lambeth Palace Library in 2020. Her
expertise is in Parchment Conservation; her management skills lie in
change, conservation programming and project development; and she provides
practical conservation and preventive training to her team and interns, as
well as teach.
