Questionnaire on opinions regarding the treatment of retouching and overpainting in different situations
Time sensitive I am a third year student on the BA (Hons) Conservation of Cultural Heritage course at the University of Lincoln. For my dissertation I am conducting research into contemporary conservation/restoration treatments of retouching and overpainting (see questionnaire for definitions of these terms in this context) and am particularly interested in whether it is felt that overpainting should be removed or not and the factors that determine conservators' decisions. The relevant literature discusses related ethical issues and the main concern appears to be maintaining the values the artwork presents to a modern audience with respect to authenticity and the object's integrity as historic document. While the literature review on the subject has been very informative giving me some understanding of ethical guidelines that should be applied where possible, gathering opinions of experienced conservators would be invaluable as they will understand why applying the ideals of ethics is not always straightforward in practice. Paintings conservators and conservators of other fields are likely to have worked on projects where treatment could not consistently follow set ethical guidelines; they will understand the complexities of dealing with overpainting that may be as significant today as the original work, and have their own views on how it should be treated in different situations. Therefore, I aim to collate opinions through the following questionnaire allowing me to ascertain whether there is a general consensus on how overpainting should be treated or if it is too multi-faceted an issue for there to be one clear viewpoint. Copy and paste this link into your browser. It will take you to the questionnaire where you can fill it out online: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/H3XR7CD I would be very grateful for your input and thank you in advance for taking the time to participate.
