Cambridge University Library is currently seeking a Book and Paper Conservator to work on the Cambridge University Press Archive. The Press traces its history back to 1534 when Henry VIII granted Letters Patent to the University to print 'all manner of books'. The archive preserves 300 years of printing and publishing history; from Curators' Books of 1696 to digital material of the 21st century. It contains sealed parchment documents, leather-bound volumes, photographs, glass-plate negatives and files of administrative papers. Cambridge University Press has funded the conservation of its archive for four years and has committed to another year's funding. The priorities for this year focus on the completion of the conservation and preservation of outstanding items identified in a condition survey compiled in 2014 and of those subsequently added to the collection, in addition to items currently stored at the University Printing House in preparation for their long term storage at the University Library. Work on the collection will include drawing up treatment proposals, carrying out conservation treatments and boxing. Other elements include the preparation of material for exhibition in the CUP Museum and providing support for colleagues in the Digital Content Unit, when necessary. Knowledge of book structures and experience of book conservation is essential. Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 1 year in the first instance.
