AATA Assistant Editor

Job Summary 
The Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) is seeking a creative, forward-looking, 
and collaborative Assistant Editor to support AATA Online, a comprehensive 
database of over 147,000 abstracts of literature related to the preservation 
and conservation of material cultural heritage. A major reference work for the 
conservation field, AATA Online has been freely available online since 2002. 
Updated quarterly, AATA Online adds approximately 4,000 new records to the 
resource annually.
 
This position reports to the Managing Editor of AATA Online and is primarily 
responsible for subject indexing of articles, book chapters, conference 
proceedings, and other research materials intended for heritage conservation 
professionals. The Assistant Editor has a leading role in AATA workflow and 
assists in establishing and maintaining records in the database.

Major Job Responsibilities 
. Original indexing of abstracts written in English using AATA terms and those 
found in Getty's vocabularies (Thesaurus of Geographic Names [TGN], Art & 
Architecture Thesaurus [AAT], Union List of Artist Names [ULAN])
. Revises existing data and indexing to enhance access to information in AATA 
Online
. Contributes to vocabularies development by submitting new terms to TGN, AAT, 
and ULAN
. Participates in the selection of materials for inclusion in AATA Online, 
including articles, chapters, conference proceedings, and texts from English 
and non-English scholarly literature related to the preservation and 
conservation of material cultural heritage and related fields
. Analyzes and synthesizes content from scholarly journal articles, books, 
chapters, and other sources to create records
. Creates records with accurate descriptive information that allow for 
precision search and retrieval
. Ensures quality control through fact checking, research, and standardization
. Light editing of abstracts for compliance with indexing terms
. May train others
. Advances awareness of AATA Online through participation in professional 
meetings and other forums
. Collaborates with other staff on various projects and initiatives
. Develops proficiency using technology tools and software application designed 
for AATA Online
. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications 
. Master's degree in information science, conservation, science, art history, 
or a related field
. Familiarity with conservation and preservation of material culture
. Reading knowledge of at least one European language other than English
. 1-2 years professional experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 
. Advanced knowledge of the principles of indexing or subject analysis, 
particularly selecting and applying vocabulary terms
. Ability to meet deadlines, apply policies and procedures consistently, 
conduct research, and present recommendations
. Strong written and verbal communication skills
. Effective interpersonal and collaborative skills in an interdisciplinary 
environment
. Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a 
small team
