12 month fixed-term contract. Salary: 30,395 - 39,609 Applications close: Sunday 19th May at midnight. To apply: http://www.jobs.cam.ac.uk/job/21194/ The Fitzwilliam Museum houses the principal collections of art and antiquities of the University of Cambridge, and holds over half a million objects in its care. It is also one of the eight museums that comprise the University of Cambridge Museums consortium (UCM). The successful candidate will join a team of 7 conservators (attached to curatorial departments), a collections care conservator and a research scientist all working under the Head of Conservation. The Hamilton Kerr Institute (HKI) for paintings conservation is a department of the Fitzwilliam, with its own Director, who is also Assistant Director (Conservation) of the Fitzwilliam. The Museum conservators and the staff of the HKI form the Fitzwilliam Museum Conservation Division. This new post will provide conservation and collections care support for the Department of Coins and Medals, which holds internationally important material from the origins of coinage to the present day, and a collection of historical and art medals together with military and civil awards. Through condition survey, technical investigation, conservation treatment and collections care strategies, the Conservator will ensure that these collections are preserved and can be made safely accessible for both academic study and public enjoyment. The Conservator will also participate in the Museum-wide Collections Care programme and collaborate with other conservators across the Museum and the UCM Collections Care and Conservation Consultation Group (4C). 'Being an Islander': Art and Identity of the large Mediterranean Islands', a special research and exhibition initiative based in the Department of Antiquities and supported by international collaborations, presents an excellent opportunity for the Conservator to develop personal research interests and contribute to a high profile, innovative project. S/he will undertake a condition assessment of the 171 Cypriot and Aegean bronze and iron (Bronze and EIA period) objects in the Fitzwilliam's Cypriot collection, following this with technical investigation and conservation treatment of selected objects. Candidates should hold a recognised qualification in objects conservation (with a metalwork component) or equivalent experience. They should have a current demonstrable track record of technical investigation (especially X-radiography), condition assessment and conservation treatment of objects made completely or partially from metal. Experience of archaeological metalwork is essential. Candidates should have a collaborative, supportive and flexible team working style together with effective oral and written skills. In addition to the application form you must provide an illustrated portfolio of your work, a maximum of 8 sides of A4 in length, detailing THREE relevant projects. Any queries should be directed to [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> or Tel: +44 (0)1223 764840.
