Better Networking for Disasters: Improving Participation and Coordination for Disaster Response and Recovery of Cultural Heritagean ALCTS 2019 Preconference Friday, June 21, 2019, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. | Event code: ALC1 | Register<https://2019.alaannual.org/registration/ticketed-events#ALCTS> Using last year's hurricane season in Puerto Rico as a case study, this session will bring together individuals and organizations involved in disaster response and recovery of cultural heritage. It aims to explore ways to improve coordination and increase engagement of ALA members, in disaster response and recovery. This mix of formal presentations, moderated panels and a breakout session for the audience is designed to inspire collaborations that extend beyond the current modes of working. Co-sponsors: This preconference is co-sponsored by the ALA International Relations Office, the Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Work (FAIC)/ National Heritage Responders (NHR), and the Preservation Administration and Reformatting Section (PARS). Objectives By the end of this preconference, participants will understand how to * Increase librarian engagement in disaster response, including recruiting, training and supporting a wider range of responders and response efforts * Increase local capacity, including building and supporting local recovery * Share information about needs, relief efforts that are underway, resources that are available, and opportunities for collaboration * Conduct better disaster coordination such as pooling information and resources to optimize response time, coverage, and effectiveness Target Audience Preservation librarians, curators and other cultural stewards interested in disaster preparedness.
