Hello everyone,

I would like to extend an invitation for participation in a research survey
on stitching methods used in tapestry conservation.

Study Title: MPhil. Textile Conservation Dissertation – ‘*A Research
Project to Measure the Effectiveness of Stitching Methods When Stabilizing
Weak Areas in Tapestries*’

Researcher: Eva Catic – [email protected]/ [email protected]

Supervisor: Professor Frances Lennard – [email protected]

*Invitation *

You are invited to take part in a research questionnaire in conjunction
with a Master’s dissertation from the Centre for Textile Conservation and
Technical Art History, University of Glasgow. Please take time to read the
following information and consider whether or not you would like to take
part.

If you have any questions about this research study or if you are
interested in the results, please do not hesitate to contact me. You can
contact me via mail at [email protected].

You may also contact my research supervisor, Frances Lennard via email at
[email protected].

*What is the purpose of the study?*

Securing weak areas are one of the main considerations for tapestry
conservation. Several methods were developed during the 20th century but
rarely are they compared with each other to better understand their results
and consequences when applied on a tapestry. My dissertation at the Centre
for Textile Conservation, University of Glasgow concentrates on analysing
various stitching methods used to secure weak areas on tapestries, in order
to find a minimal interventive method that helps to stabilize and visually
infill a weak or loss area within a tapestry.

With your help, I will be able to identify the most common stitching
methods in tapestry conservation which I will use for an experimental
strain monitoring testing.

*Who should participate?*

Professionals with first-hand experience in tapestry conservation. The
questions should reflect your practice when treating tapestries.

You are not obliged to take part, but your participation would be greatly
appreciated and your time valued.

Questionnaire participants will remain anonymous in both printed and online
versions of the final research document. Your answers will be discussed
and compared to answers by other participants without prejudice.

*Survey format and logistics*

If needed the questionnaire is also available in French, German and Italian.

The questionnaire is composed of multiple choice and free text, and the
answers are automatically saved. Any further comments you wish to share
would be gratefully received. It should take approximately 15-30 minutes
to complete.

The survey will close on the 30th of May, 2019.
