The Courtauld Institute of Art is the UK’s leading institution for teaching and research into the History of Art and the Conservation of Easel Paintings and is also home to one of the finest small art museums in the world. The Courtauld Institute of Art seeks to recruit an early-career paintings conservator for a 9-month fellowship supported by the Getty Foundation as part of its Conserving Canvas initiative. The fellow will work at both the Courtauld Institute of Art in Vernon Square and Royal Museums Greenwich Prince Philip Maritime Collections Centre in Kidbrooke. The fellow will first explore archival materials relating to structural treatments of paintings on canvas in the 1970s and 1980s at both partner institutions. Materials related to the Greenwich Lining conference in 1974 will be collated by the fellow who will also interview participants in the lining conference and former staff of the RMG conservation department. The fellow will be responsible for identifying a small group of paintings for further study of their condition, working with a team of recognised experts in the structural treatment of canvas paintings to assess how linings carried out in the 70s and 80s are performing today<calendar:T5:today>. The Department of Conservation and Technology studios are exceptionally lively with an open forum for the exchange of ideas and exploration of conservation treatment options. The research within the department is internationally recognised and covers a wide variety of topics and disciplines within the field of conservation, including technical art history, conservation science and the exploration and development of conservation treatment ideas.
