Background We are looking for a skilled and self-motivated book and/or paper conservator who will work as part of a team to deliver a conservation and preservation service to the Archives and its collections, ensuring the long-term preservation and accessibility of our physical collections. The Parliamentary Archives is a shared service of both Houses of Parliament, based in the House of Lords but jointly funded by the House of Lords and House of Commons. It provides innovative and expert information management, preservation, access and outreach services enabling anyone in the world to use Parliament’s records, both now and in the future. The Archives holds over 8km of physical records dating back to 1497, including many of the most important constitutional records in the UK, such as the Bill of Rights, the 1832 Great Reform Act and the Death Warrant of Charles I, as well as many others which have touched the lives of everyone and every community in this country and many abroad. The Collection Care team consists of 6 staff who undertake a range of conservation and preservation activities to help secure the stability of the Archive’s physical collections and enable public access. They also work with other collections teams across Parliament, including the Libraries, Works of Art and Historic Furnishings. The team is also playing a key role in supporting the Archives Accommodation Programme (AAP) Pack & Track (PAT) Project team, which is working to prepare the Archives’ collections for a move. This work is necessary preparation for the decant of the Parliamentary Archives from the Palace ahead of the restoration work on the building. The Role The postholder will primarily be responsible for undertaking preservation and conservation projects on bound and flat, paper and parchment records, in support of the Pack and Track project and the Archives’ digitisation and exhibitions and outreach requirements. The Person The successful candidate will have the following skills/experience: -Experience of working with Library and Archive materials, undertaking preservation and conservation actions on books, paper, parchment -An understanding of current Collection Care best practice -The ability to work under pressure to achieve targets, and to manage competing requirements, managing expectations and prioritising appropriately -The ability to work under your own initiative and as part of a team on projects or routine tasks -A willingness to learn and update knowledge and skills through research and training More information can be found in the job description.
