The Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) with support from the
Foundation for Advancement in Conservation (FAIC) will host a special six-day
hands-on workshop on the Construction of Japanese Scrolls. The program is
targeted to Western paper conservators who can apply this traditional Japanese
approach to craftsmanship to their treatment repertoire. It will also help to
establish the foundation for those individuals who are interested in learning
more about Asian paintings conservation.

Painting/calligraphy samples will be provided by the instructor for the
workshop or you may bring your own work to be mounted. The dimensions of the
participant's painting will need to be approved by the instructor before use.
The brocade silk for the borders will be included along with all other mounting
supplies. Participants in the workshop will learn to line their sample works
and border brocades prior to assembly. Scroll assembly techniques will be
taught including the proper attachment of the rollers and knobs, the futai, and
hanging and wrapping cords. A scroll box will be available for each
participant. Attendees will learn traditional techniques of paper cutting,
folding, use of traditional hand tools and lining techniques. Demonstrations of
remedial scroll repair will also be presented. The understanding and use of
these traditional Japanese techniques will be advantageous for all Western
paper conservators.
