Samuel H. Kress Fellowship in Photograph Conservation Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum 2019–2020
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York is accepting applications for a one-year, full-time Samuel H. Kress Fellowship in Photograph Conservation, starting in the fall of 2019. The Kress Fellowship will focus on the conservation, preservation, and research into the photographic collection held by the Guggenheim Museum, working in a collaborative and interdisciplinary lab. This position is generously funded by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, administered by the Foundation for Advancement in Conservation (FAIC). The Fellow will work closely with the Senior Conservator, Paper and Photographs in supporting the museum's mission to display, preserve, and expand our understanding of the Guggenheim's collection of photographic works. Responsibilities include: * Performing conservation treatment; * Participating in interviews with artists to process new acquisitions and discuss long-term preservation methods and variable parameters; * Developing appropriate housings for storage of collection materials; * Liaising and collaborating with curators, exhibition designers, framers, art handlers, and registrars with regard to loan, exhibition, storage, and transport; * Attending exhibition meetings and participating in related activities to prepare photographs for exhibition; * Participating in discussions and activities related to preventive conservation, including environmental controls, periodic assessment of collections and emergency preparedness, response and recovery; and * Contributing to presentations for patrons and the public in order make accessible the field of conservation and the necessity for the preservation of cultural heritage. The Kress Conservation Fellow will also have the unique opportunity to participate in a research initiative focused on the Guggenheim's Robert Mapplethorpe Collection. In 1992 the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation generously named the Guggenheim Foundation the recipient of 194 of Mapplethorpe's photographs and unique objects, spanning every period from Mapplethorpe's oeuvre. Conservation research will involve a focused technical investigation to characterize the physical and chemical attributes of each collection work. The successful candidate will have completed a graduate degree from a conservation program in the U.S. or Canada, and is legally authorized to work in the U.S. Also eligible are U.S. citizens graduating from a graduate-level conservation program abroad. Graduate level training should include an emphasis in photograph conservation.
