*ABOUT THE GEORGE EASTMAN MUSEUM*

The George Eastman Museum is located in Rochester, New York, on the estate
of George Eastman, the pioneer of popular photography and motion picture
film. Founded in 1947 as an independent nonprofit institution, it is the
world’s oldest photography museum and one of the oldest film archives. The
museum holds unparalleled collections—encompassing several million
objects—in the fields of photography, cinema, photographic and
cinematographic technology, and photographically illustrated books.



*OVERVIEW*

The main focus of this position is to support all efforts of the Kay R.
Whitmore Conservation Center in preserving the photography collection of
the George Eastman Museum.



*PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES*

   - Implement best practices for the conservation and preservation of
   collection materials.
   - Participate in all departmental activities including examination,
   documentation, analysis and conservation treatment of collection materials.
   - Provide exhibition and loan support.
   - Assess condition of proposed acquisitions.
   - Perform collection surveys.
   - Engage in collection research.
   - Provide advice, assistance, and training to museum staff and
   occasionally to the public on various preservation topics, such as handling
   and storage.
   - Serve as a courier for collection materials on loan.
   - Pursue independent studies and professional opportunities
   as appropriate.



*PHYSICAL ACTIVITY*

The responsibilities of this position may require repetitive motion and
lifting up to 40 lbs.



*WORK ENVIRONMENT*

Work takes place primarily in the conservation laboratory located within
the George Eastman Museum’s main building.



*EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS*

Master’s degree from a recognized art conservation program, with a
specialization in photographic materials.



*SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES REQUIREMENTS*

   - Demonstrated commitment to the profession of photograph conservation.
   - Wide knowledge of materials and technologies encountered in the
   creation of photographic objects.
   - Up-to-date knowledge on the methods of photograph conservation.
   - A high degree of manual dexterity.
   - Experience in analytical examination methods of photographic materials.
   - Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
   - Strong organizational abilities.
   - Proficiency in The Museum System (TMS), Microsoft Office, and Adobe
   Photoshop preferred.
   - Knowledge of standard museum practices, protocols and ethics.
