The AIC Contemporary Art Network (CAN!) is seeking proposals for two sessions at the 2020 AIC Annual Meeting, May 19-23, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The deadline for submissions is September 16, 2019. Please see below for more information on how to submit an abstract. CONCURRENT GENERAL SESSION: EXTERNAL FORCES IN CONTEMPORARY ART CONSERVATION
Chairs: Mareike OpeƱa and Kate Moomaw on behalf of the Contemporary Art Network (CAN!)<https://www.culturalheritage.org/membership/groups-and-networks/contemporary-art-network> It can be tempting to picture the conservation of contemporary art as just the interplay between the conservator, the artwork, and the artist over time - already a complex enough dance. However, there are many external factors beyond the control of the conservator and even the artist which impact decision-making, limit options for treatment, and significantly influence the way an artwork is experienced. We invite papers on how we as contemporary art conservators creatively respond to, prepare for, and communicate about unpredictable factors such as the art market, collectors and owners, shifting institutional priorities, availability of commercial materials and technologies, the rapid deterioration of artist's materials, climate change, laws and regulations, political and cultural influences, etc. Please contact Kate Moomaw (CAN! Program Chair, kmoo...@denverartmuseum.org<mailto:kmoo...@denverartmuseum.org>) with any questions. RESEARCH AND TECHNICAL STUDIES AND CONTEMPORARY ART JOINT SPECIALTY SESSION The Research and Technical Studies specialty group and the Contemporary Art Network (CAN!) invite papers related to the conference theme of Conservation: Reactive and Proactive in the context of the technical investigation of contemporary artists' materials and techniques. Submissions related to the topics below are encouraged, though others related to contemporary art will be considered. * Research on the material characteristics or ageing properties of 3-D printing media, modern synthetics, composites, etc. * Development or use of "green," sustainable and bio-degradable polymers or other materials * Research on contemporary artists' materials and techniques developed or used outside of North American and Europe * Collaborations among conservation scientists, conservators, and/or artists in fabricating or conserving contemporary art Please note that RATS will produce a post-print in the form either annotated slides or extended abstracts of up to 1000 words and no more than three figures. Post-prints are due Monday, June 22, 2020. Please contact Kate Moomaw (CAN! Program Chair, kmoo...@denverartmuseum.org<mailto:kmoo...@denverartmuseum.org>) or Gregory Bailey (RATS Program Chair, gbai...@thewalters.org<mailto:gbai...@thewalters.org>) with any questions HOW TO SUBMIT AN ABSTRACT The submission deadline for abstracts is Monday, September 16, 2019.
