Andrew W. Mellon Collections Assistant, Fowler Museum at UCLA
The Fowler Museum at UCLA seeks an Andrew W. Mellon Collections Assistant to 
participate in a collaborative interdisciplinary research projected devoted to 
the Museum's African art collections, considered one of the five largest such 
collections in the United States. This project, supported by a major grant from 
the Andrew J. Mellon Foundation, will focus on African objects from the Sir 
Henry Wellcome Collection that were donated to the Fowler between 1965-67. The 
Fowler Museum at UCLA is pleased to offer an 80% time 28-month position.  50% 
time will be dedicated to the Mellon project (Collaborative Interdisciplinary 
Research on African Collections at the Fowler Museum) and the additional 30% 
will be dedicated to assisting the Conservation Department.  Under the 
direction of the Head of Conservation and the Director of Registration and 
Collections Management, the Collections Management Assistant will inventory all 
of the African objects in the Wellcome collection.  In the process of 
performing the inventory they will update the digital and physical files, 
maintain the database records, process and upload photographic documentation 
according to Fowler Museum standards, and manage the importation of appropriate 
digital assets into the database.  The Assistant will be the key art handler 
assisting in the movement of objects and textiles within the Museum between 
storage areas, galleries, museum departments and off-site for analysis if 
required. The Collections Management Assistant will utilize the database to 
perform searches, input information, and research and maintain object location 
information. The Assistant will participate in the fabrication object specific 
storage mounts and pack objects for transportation. The Assistant will attend 
monthly "workshops" (or roundtables) where the data and information is shared 
and reviewed with the participating Fowler Staff.  As part of the Conservation 
Department, the Assistant will also examine, document and perform very minor 
treatments on objects and textiles that are slated for exhibitions and outgoing 
loans, maintaining database records for various projects in the Department.  
The Assistant will carry out routine monitoring of museum environment and pest 
mitigation.  A BA/BS in conservation, museum studies, anthropology, art history 
or a related field is required, although a Master's degree or equivalent 
training in conservation is preferable.

Additional Information:

The term of this contract position is expected to start in September of 2019 
and may last up until the end of 2021. The application deadline is September
