CCI would like to honour former colleague and conservation advocate, Mr. Philip
R. Ward (1926-2019), who passed away this spring.

After World War II, Phil taught art before joining the staff of the British
Museum as a Museum Assistant in the Department of Oriental Antiquities. There,
he studied conservation under Dr. Harold Plenderleith and worked closely with
Dr. Anthony Werner, who were pioneers in applying the latest scientific
approaches to the conservation of cultural property.

Phil immigrated to Canada in 1966 to found the Conservation Division at the
British Columbia Provincial Museum (now the Royal BC Museum). In this role,
Phil developed, expanded and firmly established conservation as a key
profession in museums and as a key part of fieldwork across the country. For
his dedication and achievements in the service of our profession, he is
recognized as the "father of conservation" in Canada.

Phil began his career with CCI in 1977, where he served until 1990 in positions
that included Senior Conservation Advisor; Director, Conservation Services; and
Director, Information and Extension Services. In addition to being a dedicated
conservator and educator, he was also an author. His book The Nature of
Conservation: A Race Against Time was published by ICOM and the Getty
Conservation Institute in 1986.

Phil's legacy remains strong at CCI and across Canada. He is an unforgettable
member of the CCI family.
