I am looking into the suitability of medical grade silicone tubing on metal
mounts for the long-term display of objects. I am worried about the presence of
unreacted silicone oils and their transfer to objects during display.
It is my understanding that medical grade silicone rubber tubing has less
extractives and is therefore considered safe to use with objects. My worry is
that this tubing is designed for short-term use and a very different purpose
and may therefore not be suitable for use, particularly in long-term
exhibitions.
I was wondering if anyone has carried out any recent research on this subject
or could direct me towards any further information? I would also be interested
to hear what alternatives are used elsewhere.
