UK conservators not already aware of it may be interested in the recently
established Conservation Grants Fund offered by the National Conservation
Service.

The NCS Fund is aimed at filling gaps in heritage sector funding and
strengthening the relationship between institutions without conservation staff
and Accredited Conservator businesses in their region. Of principle interest
to conservators is probably the strand that covers grants for museums,
libraries and archives who need a small sum to pay for an Accredited
Conservator to carry out an assessment of a collection ahead of a larger bid,
for example to the National Manuscripts Conservation Trust, Arts Council,
Wellcome Trust and others, for the conservation works identified.

A similar strand of the NCS Fund covers grants to pay Accredited Conservators
to report on the condition and ongoing conservation needs of a collection or
object that an institution wishes to acquire but needs better to understand its
conservation impact before deciding to do so.

The NCS Conservation Grants Fund is applied for by the institution but the
payment goes to the conservator on completion of the assessment. Grants
typically are around 500 to 1000. Grants are for institutions commissioning
such advice and work from private-practice, Icon registered conservation
businesses and are not normally expected to be provided for the assessment to
be done by an institution-based salaried conservator unless no other specialist
in a region can be found, or none that can travel to carry it out.

If you are a small conservation practice and work locally with museums or
archives in your area, do consider bringing the NCS Fund to their attention.

The NCS Fund is resourced from Business Member Partner subscriptions, currently
Arcade-UK Ltd and Jamie Briggs Removals Ltd, with an additional donation from
The James & Deirdre Dyson Trust.

We have awarded four grants this year and there are funds available still for
2019. For more information about the Fund, go to www.ncs.org.uk
