Good day,
I am in the process of assessing the best way to protect some public artworks
during a major renovation project that will touch both the inside and outside
of the building where they are installed. The construction involves the use of
heavy equipment – large cranes to work on the façade, excavators to demolish
some structures, etc.
A few of the artworks can be fairly easily removed and stored during the
construction project, but for two very large outdoor sculptures it may be much
more complex, so I am looking into if it would be more beneficial to protect
them on site, though the question of moving them is also considered. We have no
plans of how these were constructed / installed and they were not made to be
uninstalled, so it will be a fairly risky enterprise.

I am looking for feedback from conservators who have had to protect artworks
on site during construction work nearby, to see what types of protection were
considered, and used, and any positive or negative aspects that you may have
found with your choice.

Both sculptures are about 25 feet high, and about 25 feet x 25 on the ground.
At the moment I am considering proposing to install a scaffold around the
pieces and cover the scaffold with a very bright color fabric to make it more
visible. I am aware the scaffold would need to be fixed to the ground and
assessed by an engineer.  My other option is constructing a plywood 'box' over
the elements, though given the size I am more doubtful about this option. I am
open to any other realistic idea.
