Hi Ozge,
You are correct, it is always recommended to perform the Oddy test using new
materials. Having said that, I am not positive all the gloves that were sent to
me were recently purchased. This was my first round of testing and it
could/should be repeated. Also, other gloves have been submitted to me for
testing so a second round is forthcoming. I will try to make sure that the
gloves were all recently purchased before testing them.
Thank you,
Catherine

Dear Ana,

We are conducting Oddy tests on nitrile gloves (and latex ones as well in the
past) and unfortunately all of them failed including the SHOWA® N-DEX® 7705PFT
4 Mil 9½" Disposable Nitrile Exam Gloves. We will continue testing them though.
We know we have to find one that works. We still use them and handle our silver
with them, until we find a better solution. We also tend to change them a lot.

We are currently re-assessing the type of nitrile gloves we use daily in
handling of collections, and I would like to open up a up-to-date discussion
about the types and choices taken in the community. This re-assessment was
prompted by a concern related certain components in the gloves affecting the
metal surfaces (halides or sulphur accelerants). Does anyone knows of studies
concerning the effects of certain nitrile gloves in object handling?
I have recently looked into the N-Dex brand from Showa, but it seems they are
no longer using the specific N-Dex reference anymore. I am also curious about
the performance of their new biodegradable gloves. Thoughts on the new types of
gloves they offer? How do the usual medical-, food- or industrial-grade nitrile
gloves brands such as Kimberly-Clark perform?
