Avant-Garde
Message: Faking Russia. Half a Century of Forging the Russian Avant-Garde

Forgery on an industrial scale!

25 November 2024

7pm – 8.30pm GMT | Online

Konstantin Akinsha, art historian, curator and journalist, will present the
following:

The Russian avant-garde has become one of the most frequently faked art
movements on the art market. While in the 1960s through the early 1990s, the
lack of proper expertise defined the situation, the collapse of the USSR
brought the hope that increased access to museum collections and archives would
improve authentication.

However, this change never materialized. The late 1990s saw a flood of
forgeries, many of which even made their way into museum exhibitions.
High-profile scandals, such as the SNZ Gallery case in 2013 and the Toporovsky
"collection" exhibition in 2017, shook the art world but failed to curb the
spread of fakes.

Will we see you there?

 Subject: Update on Fibers
 Message: Message:
To date, I have received over 38 requests for the set of fibers. I had not
anticipated such an overwhelming response. My goal with the collection was to
first have it preserved, 2nd to have samples available for as many
conservators, students, researchers, and archivists as possible. This
eliminates individual labs and practitioners so if you responded, thank you for
your interest. You will receive no further immediate communication. The final
deposition of the collection will be announced when resolved so hopefully you
will have some access in the future to the collection to satisfy your needs.

To all others, I will be assembling and forwarding some further information on
the collection (it is actually 149 samples) along with a questionnaire that
will be of benefit to us in evaluating the most appropriate repository. I'm
going to assemble a committee of professionals in the field to assist in this
effort. You should be contacted in the next few weeks if you are being
considered to receive the collection.

Again, thank you for your interest and dedication to preservation of all
knowledge that assists in benefiting the scientific goals of the conservation
profession.
