Dear conservators,
I tested this tool. If it is used while holding the scalpel parallel to the
plane, it proves effective in removing mud encrustations. Try it to believe.

Dear Marco,

it wasn't a skin scrubber, but I have used a handheld ultrasonic
dentristy-device to remove previously molten wax from parchment surfaces. It
worked rather well.

Dear conservators,

I would like to know if any restorers of paper artifacts have ever used an
ultrasonic skin scrubber to remove surface deposits of dirt.

 Message:
Hi Emily,

It's called blockboard, consisting of a solid wood core (in this case something
dense and white like lime/basswood) and two veneer layers of thick veneer
(maybe an 'African mahogany' like sipo or sapeli). Blockboard would be
commercially available in the 20s, it's often used for table tops or other tops
where dimensional stability is required. Technically, you'd be able to produce
it yourself in a workshop but you'd need a proper press to do so. I find the
oblique veneer joint with signs of a former tape over it somewhat suspicious,
that doesn't point to an industrial manufacture.

It's not uncommon to see former (panel) paintings that have been transferred to
a blockboard or plywood support, each with its own characteristics or problems.

Subject: Painting supports

Does anyone recognize this particular painting support, used by the artist Carl
Grossberg (1894-1940) around 1925? This painting is labeled as "tempera on
panel," measuring 505 x 603mm. I haven't seen the painting in person but the
support appears to be a layer of canvas on top of a laminate wood structure.
The wood appears to be a wood veneer sandwich with a different type of wood
between the two layers of veneer. Paper tape on the reverse seems to partially
cover the side of the support in photo "Support detail 2". Does anyone know if
this is a pre-made support, maybe one that has a particular name?

Also, are there any general resources for painting supports that anyone would
recommend? It seems like the same support can be labeled "panel," "wood,"
"board," etc., and it would be great to have a way to accurately differentiate
between and properly name each support.

Thanks in advance!
