Subject: Call for papers: Marks on Art symposium at the RKD
 Message:
Call for papers

The Marks on Art conference, to be held on 30 October 2025, will focus
specifically on marks and brands on the reverses of sixteenth- and
seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish paintings on panels and copper supports.
Lumberjacks marked planks for transport. Panel and copperplate makers often
marked their products with a personal monogram. Marks by the local Guild of
Saint Luke ensured the quality of the materials used. Together, these and other
marks provide unique information about the artwork's dating and place of
origin, shedding light on attribution, authenticity and the production process.

We invite 20-minute papers that explore the following themes and questions:
Studies of various marks and their significance in the historical,
commercial, and technical contexts of artworks, or cross-cultural or
historical studies that highlight the evolution of such marks in art
production, distribution, and attribution.Specific panel makers or copperplate
makers; their workshop practices, the origins of their materials,
specializations (specific sizes, formats, provenance of the material), and the
significance of these factors for the production and trade of
paintings.Relationships between painters/dealers and support makers, including
questions of preferred collaborators and motivations behind these choices.
Were choices for supports based on quality, availability, or
proximity?Examination of (international) trade networks for supports and their
materials, and how international commerce affected the production,
availability, and use of supports across regions and times.Connections to
dendrochronological studies (e.g. Dendro4Art): to explore wood
provenance and age analysis; investigations into the timelines from tree
felling to panel production to painting.Digital innovations: exploring the
potential of online databases and Artificial Intelligence in identifying and
cataloging marks, including the use of image recognition software. Papers
might examine the application of these technologies for historical research and
the authentication of marks and to analyze trends across artworks.
Proposals

Please submit a preliminary title, abstract (max. 300 words) and a short bio by
28 February 2025 to Angela Jager ([email protected] <%[email protected]>). The academic
committee will select the successful papers. Notifications of acceptance will
be sent by 31 March 2025. Selected presentations will be considered for
publication in Marks on Art: New Insights vol. 2. Please contact the organizers
with any questions concerning the conference and this call for papers.

specialty groups that have tips that can relate to Book and Paper conservation.
Please reach out if you have any questions **

BPG CALL FOR TIPS

The Book and Paper Group (BPG) invites submissions for the 2025 Annual Meeting
TIPS Session! We welcome contributions not only from BPG but also from all AIC
specialty groups to share insights with colleagues -whether it's about
discoveries, favorite tools, techniques, or lessons learned in your work.

Tips can cover any aspect of book and paper conservation, from treatment and
documentation to lab/studio setup and research. Some examples include:

·   Share a new technique, tool, or material you've been using in treatments.

·   Describe how you customized lab equipment.

·   Recommend a vendor for hard-to-find gadgets.

·   Tell us about a creative solution or innovation to a challenging problem.

·   Reflect on treatments that didn't go as planned or have you stumped.

Tips should be short and informal, lasting about five minutes each. No
PowerPoint slides are necessary for this fast-paced, 30-minute session! Feel
free to keep it simple with just a few words, a handout, or a slide or two if
needed. There's no pressure-your BPG colleagues are excited to hear from you!

To participate, please submit a brief description of your tip to the BPG
Assistant Program Chair, Anita Dey, at [email protected] <[email protected]>.
Submissions will be reviewed as they are received, with a deadline of February
1st, 2025 for full consideration. Accepted presenters will be notified by
February 20, 2025. Please reach out if you have any questions about the session.

Subject: RE: Looking for information about copies of book 'Aurora Australis'
 Message: Dear all,

Thank you all for such generous responses to my question about copies of
'Aurora Australis'. All of the leads you have sent have been really useful and
much appreciated. One which is certainly worth checking is the Antarctic Circle
website which lists all of the known copies in both public (43) and private
collections. Most interestingly for me at this point of my project is that many
of the records for the publicly held copies include notes from personal
inspections made in 2010/11, and many include details about their condition -

Dear all,

In preparation for working on the Bodleian's copy of 'Aurora Australis', the
book printed and bound on Shackleton's journey to Antarctica in 1908, I am
hoping to find out a bit more about the location and condition of other copies
(it's estimated between 70 and 100 were made), and in particular if/how they
have been conserved and digitised.

Any information about other copies would be gratefully received.

Best wishes,

Alice
