I had a minor success using alcohol to lessen a pink dye stain and then some
more success with UV light, but it was a long time ago and I don't recall the
details.  It would depend on the dye and how deep it has migrated.

Kirsty,

I use a lot of dyes and inevitably will get some on my skin when a glove gets a
puncture. I use a special hand cleaner called Reduran which removes the dye
stain from my skin as if magic. I'm not sure if it would be suitable for ivory
however. I'm a wooden objects conservator and know very little about ivory.
Reduran was re-named a few years ago to Kresto Kolor Special. Sadly it was
discontinued by the manufacturer/distributor here in the States, but I suspect
that it might still be available in UK or Europe as it seems like a European
product. If you do find it over there, let me know as my supply is running low
and there is no replacement.

There is an entirely different product called Amodex and it is marketed to
people who use fountain pens . . . sooner or later fountain pen users get ink
on their clothes. You might consider looking into this product as well.

Best wishes,

Hello,

I am currently conserving a set of instruments with ivory handles. They were
damaged in a leak, and the dye from the case was transferred onto the ivory. We
have managed to remove some of the dye but it is still pretty obvious. We have
tried humidifying, IDA and WA paste, but it has not removed the dye. I was
hopping that someone may have more experience and ideas into what could be done
to remove the dye.

Thank you,

Greetings All,

We at the Walters have observed calcium acetate crystals forming on plaster,
ceramics, and limestone, the culprit being an ultrasuede fabric that off-gassed
acetic acid; this research was presented at the 2013 AIC Annual Meeting in a
poster by Julie Lauffenburger: 035. When Due Diligence isn't Enough: Revisiting
the Question of Case Materials
<https://www.culturalheritage.org/events/annual-meeting/past-meetings/41st-annual-meeting-indianapolis/2013-posters/docs/default-source/publications/annualmeeting/2013-posters/2013am_poster35_when_due_diligence>

We have also noted a deposition of some efflorescence on the interiors of cases
that have older gaskets; it seems that this is an interaction between the
adhesive and the gasket and appears to be light-catalyzed.

I should note that we no longer use ultrasuede products or gaskets in our cases
and have removed them from almost all of our existing stock.

Many thanks to those who have contributed to this discussion-

Best wishes,

-Greg

Dear Ms. Segelstein,

it would be interesting to know what material the object in question is made
from and can you show some photos? I present a number of examples of the impact
of VOCs on inorganic materials in my book Volatile Organic Compounds and the
Conservation of Inorganic Materials, Archetype Publications, London, 2016.

Gerard's review is an excellent article. You can add another possible but not
common efflorescence - ammonium carnalite - see Wheeler and Wypyski Studies in
Conservation 1993. it probably derives from using HCl to remove carbonate/clay
deposits followed by neutralization with ammonia.

Dear Ms. Segelstein, interesting case! Is that ceramics your crystals are
growing on? We have seen similar looking growth of various calcium acetate
phases on ceramics and calcareous materials, see our review paper at ICOM-CC

Dear colleagues,
At Heritage Conservation Centre (Singapore) we are facing crystals growth on an
artefact inside a showcase. In museums, crystals have been reported in few
cases, from 2006 with thanks to the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam) and the Museum of
Fine Arts (Boston). After analysis, the Rijksmuseum and the MFA found the same
pollutant compound. We found something different. And you, do you have crystals
issue ?
Please contact us to share with HCC team. We can start a review of these cases
to help the conservation community to understand these phenomena, preventive
measures and remedial treatments.

 Subject: Working Historical Lamination Machines
 Message: Dear Colleagues,

I am a student in the Advanced Professional Programme at the University of
Amsterdam Programme in the conservation and restoration of cultural heritage.
I am preparing for a research project looking into delamination of iron gall
objects laminated with cellulose acetate and how to reduce or reuse solvents
used during this treatment.

As a part of this research, I will be creating reconstructions of laminated
iron gall ink documents. I am reaching out to see if any institutions, private
firms, or individuals have historic lamination machines that are still
functioning, and if I would be able to use these machines to laminate iron gall
ink test objects for this research. I am currently casting a wide net just to
see what (if anything) is out there.

I am currently based in Amsterdam and can travel by train to any available
machines, though I would still appreciate news of any machines outside of an
easily accessible range.

Thank you for your time and help,

Emily Benton

Subject: One Day Symposium - Heritage in Transition: Skills and Approaches for
Sustainability
Message: Heritage in Transition: Skills and Approaches for Sustainability

ICOMOS-UK in partnership with the University of Liverpool is holding a one-day
symposium that may be of interest to your students, staff and communities.

The event is kindly supported by the Institute of Historic Building
Conservation (IHBC) <https://www.ihbc.org.uk/>.

Join us for a one-day symposium exploring the evolving relationship between
heritage preservation and sustainability to be held at the University of
Liverpool, HUB502 Building, Lecture Theatre 3 on 11th April 2025.

The event will focus on how we can sustainably adapt and retrofit heritage
buildings to improve energy efficiency, enhance thermal comfort, and meet
affordability needs while preserving their heritage values.

What skills and approaches will we need to do this? What might we need to do
differently?

The symposium brings together academics, policymakers, practitioners, and
emerging professionals to tackle these questions through:

• Expert-led discussions featuring international, national, and local case
studies demonstrating successful solutions and addressing ongoing challenges.

• Interactive panel sessions highlighting gaps in skills and education required
for sustainable heritage management.

• Networking opportunities for collaborative knowledge exchange.

Whether you are an architect, engineer, conservation specialist, policymaker,
academic, or student, this symposium offers practical insights and innovative
strategies for embedding sustainability in heritage conservation.

Join us as we discuss how heritage can address climate challenges and become a
catalyst for sustainable solutions more widely.

Be part of this important conversation.
