Subject: Corroded metal wires on aged plastic films
 Message: Dear colleagues,

We – the students from the Bachelor's objects conservation course of Stuttgart
State Academy of Art and Design – are currently working on conserving flying
machines (bicycles) by the German Art brut artist/inventor Gustav Mesmer.

The objects show a variety of different modern materials such as the
combination of plastics and metals. In this specific case there are
industrially produced plastic films (most likely PE, previously used in
agriculture) which are stitched together by common metal wires containing iron.
The wires are severely corroded and becoming brittle, probably due to previous
use, weathering (the objects were stored semi-sheltered outside for at least
some time), the contact to the plastic films or a combination of those factors.

In our quest to stabilize the objects and the metal wires in particular, we
failed to find pertinent literature and/or advise concerning this combination
of (aged) plastics and corroded metal/metal wires.

Therefore we are reaching out for anyone with similar experiences in modern
objects:

-          Have you had experience with stabilizing or simply supporting the
metal wire by other threaded or fibre materials (glass fibre, nylon or PE
thread, …)?

-          Do you have experience in applying a separating layer between the
wire and the film? Do you have any experience of whether this helps slowing
down the degradation of the metal and damage to the film?

-          Do you know of insightful literature concerning this combination?

Thank you and best wishes from Germany!

The students from the Bachelor's objects conservation course of Stuttgart State
Academy of Art and Design
