This seminar looks at historical and contemporary mounting and housing systems
that have been used for Western graphic art and Asian paintings, and explores
the effect that they have on pictorial art on paper and related materials.
While the ambient environmental conditions and the quality of the mounting
materials are obviously both fundamental for preservation, so are the material
components of the artwork itself and the mount structure.

Mounting styles and the intricacies of their construction are considered and
how juxtaposition of mount materials with the artwork itself affects it.

Also examined are the stresses, air leaks and pockets of air that produce
internal ‘microenvironments’ which may be responsible for chemical and
biochemical reactions like staining, foxing, mould, and manifestations of
physical stress within a given work. While such types of damage contribute to
the evidence of the history of an object, an understanding of them can also
assist in the evolution of safe storage principles.

Joanna M. Kosek is joint Head of Pictorial Art Conservation in the Department
of Collection Care at the British Museum. She studied the conservation of art
on paper at Camberwell College of Arts, London before joining the British
Museum in 1989 as a conservator of prints, drawings and watercolours. She has
engaged in teaching, publishing and lecturing on paper conservation in Europe
and also in India, China, and South Korea. She is the author of Conservation
Mounting for Prints and Drawings, A Manual Based on the Current Practice at The
British Museum, London; co-author and joint editor of Art on Paper: Mounting
and Housing for Storage and Display published by Archetype, and co-author of
Paper and Water: A Guide for Conservators published by Elsevier.
