METAL 2025 last week in Cardiff (UK) contains an article by Katja Siebel et al. (p. 181ff.) on the innovative use of saturated salt solutions of potassium carbonate in display cases. Tested by a number of conservators globally, a constant RH of 43% can be achieved easily in tight cases. Pollutants like organic acids, aldehydes and hydrogen sulfide are absorbed and neutralised. Worth a try! This three-day training will focus on the use of gels combined with aqueous solutions and organic solvents for book and paper conservation. During knowledge-based and hands-on sessions, participants will learn about the chemistry and properties of different gels to optimize their use in practice. Notions of solubility, toxicity, and sustainability will be directly applied when making and using solvent-gels for the removal of synthetic adhesives. Participants will modify gels and adjust their application methods to improve treatment efficiency. Biography of course teacher After graduating with a MA in conservation from Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University, Françoise Richard worked for private and institutional Book and Paper conservation studios in the US, Europe and the UK. In 2017, she moved to Amsterdam, Netherlands, where she joined the Rijksmuseum conservation team, before starting her own private practice. In 2021, she joined the department of Conservation and Restoration at the University of Amsterdam with a part-time lectureship while continuing to provide conservation services to Dutch cultural institutions. Attendance The attendance will be in person only for both the lectures and practical sessions. Option one - £400: Nine spots are available for the three-day workshop (lectures and practical sessions). Option two - £40: Two mornings of lectures held from 9am to 12.30pm are open to a wider audience up to 40 attendees on 20 and 21 November - Please note: this ticket option does not include afternoon workshops or any of the Saturday sessions Study objects For the practical sessions, attendees are expected to bring examples of study-objects presenting adhesive cleaning problems they would like to solve with hydrogels or solvent-gels: for instance, the removal of pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) from paper artworks or archival documents; the removal of PSA from the cover or pages of books; natural adhesive removal from the spine of a book. Booking More information and booking details are available via The London Archives website <https://www.thelondonarchives.org/whats-on/solvent-gels-workshop>. ------------------------------ Thomas Bower Conservator The London Archives London United Kingdom ------------------------------ 5.From: Monica Ganio Posted: Wednesday September 10, 2025 4:25 PM Subject: SR2A 2025 | last days to register Message: Final days to register! Your research was very useful, as were your references. Dear Colleagues - I've been searching the internet and reviewing the various AIC discussion boards looking for resources and publications specifically on structural treatments of (painted) masonite supports and have not been able to find any published case studies for repairs to damaged boards (some on paint flaking/delamination, but not damaged supports). We are currently working on a ~1970 acrylic on masonite (4' x 8') with a large impact damage/tear/puncture through the paint face and support. If anyone has meet a similar condition experience with success and is open to a quick discussion, I'd love to give you a call! Email is also great - [email protected] Thank you! ------------------------------ Elizabeth Nunan Flux Art Conservation Corp Owner and CEO (she/her/hers) www.fluxartcon.com 215-259-8559 ------------------------------ ------------------------------------------- Original Message: Sent: 09-07-2022 00:30 From: Niccolo Caldararo Subject: Masonite Dear Colleagues: There was a question about Masonite some weeks ago. Message: Dear Colleagues, Eliza Spaulding and I are seeking abstracts for the upcoming annual meeting on AI and Conservation: Current Uses and Future Directions <https://www.culturalheritage.org/events/annual-meeting/current-meeting/call-for-submissions>. Please consider submitting an abstract by September 30th! How are you currently using AI in any facet of cultural heritage work? What ethical frameworks do you use or philosophical questions do you have for applying AI to our work? How has AI enhanced our work? What challenges does it pose for us to tackle together? On a human level, what emotions does AI raise for you? The goal of the session will be to bring together practitioners and researchers for brief talks followed by facilitated discussion to create an understanding of how AI is currently being used and thought about across the AIC/CAC communities and future directions for exploration. Topics may include: Case studies of using AI for daily work, such as writing, documentation, and searching for information Case studies of using AI (machine learning, deep learning or LLMs) for conservation treatment or conservation science Ethical frameworks or philosophical questions for applying AI to cultural heritage work Results from current AI+cultural heritage surveys We welcome the opportunity to discuss ideas and questions, so please reach out anytime! The collection represents an ongoing collaboration between the GCI and the GRI to acquire and retain critical resources required to fulfill the long-term research and scholarship needs of the international conservation community. In August, we added books about transportation infrastructure, environmental aspects of house construction, polychrome sculpture, Greek and Roman antiquities, colored glass, indigenous cultural heritage practices within the California missions, modern architecture, and virtual restorations of illuminated manuscripts. See the complete list of Conservation Collection acquisitions in the attached PDF. The holdings of the Conservation Collection may be consulted at the Getty Center or borrowed through your Library's Interlibrary Loan Department. ------------------------------ Sheila Cummins Collection Development Librarian Getty Conservation Institute Los Angeles, CA 310-440-7619 [email protected] ------------------------------ You are subscribed to "Global Conservation Forum (ConsDistList)" as [email protected].
