Subject: Request For Advice - Student Project; Childs Toy Paper Accordion
 Message: Dear Colleagues,

My name is Jean and I am currently in the final year of a three-year degree at
City and Guilds London Art School studying Books and Paper Conservation.

My paper object is a rather charming child's paper accordion which is marked
"Made in Japan" (photos below).

It has been difficult to find any information during my research.

Has anyone repaired anything similar and can you provide some information about
it? Could anyone suggest good paper alternatives to repair or replace the
bellow mechanism?

The current mechanism appear to be very cheap medium weight cardboard, hastily
repaired with photo paper.

Can you point me to a specialist or know of anyone who could offer further
advice?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Jean

This online course (which is conducted over two afternoons GMT) is a basic
introduction to the topic of hazards in collections. It provides an awareness
of a range of commonly encountered hazards, giving relevant object and archival
examples, indicating situations where there may be a chance of being harmed and
describing useful precautions which may help to reduce risks.

The prime focus is the range of hazardous objects and hazardous materials which
may be encountered by conservators, technicians, collections managers,
registrars, etc who work with museum, gallery and other collections of objects
and art. The emphasis is on the evaluation of the risks posed by different
materials, measures to control / minimise such risks* and the practicalities of
protecting oneself and other staff against them including the use of warning
labelling. Over the 4 sessions, the materials covered include asbestos,
radioactive substances, toxic metals, pesticides, biohazards, chemicals,
poisons, controlled drugs, firearms and ammunition, nitrate film and
polychlorinated biphenyls. Physical hazards (blades, glass, pressure vessels
etc) are also considered. Handouts will be provided.

* Legislation exists in most countries to control the availability and use of
hazardous materials. This is mentioned in relation to UK law (which remains
very close to the EU law) but not covered in detail.

Larry Carr is one of the UK’s authorities in the subject of health hazards
found in object collections. He is a health and safety professional with more
than a decade of experience in the museums sector including the Science Museum,
British Museum and other UK National Museums.

Subject: FREE used Ion Chromatography system ICS-1100
 Message:
The English Heritage Conservation Science team is giving away a used Dionex
ICS-1100 ion chromatography system.

The system comes with all original parts and an AS-DV autosampler (carousel)
for 5 ml sample vials. However, some consumables like the suppressor and the
column may require replacement for full functionality.

This is a reliable IC system that can come in handy for analysing very dilute
samples (down to approximately 0.1 ppm or less depending on ion), soluble salts
on stone, diffusion tubes for pollution measurements etc.

Interested parties are welcome to contact
[email protected]
<[email protected]> for an in-person viewing and
collection from Greenwich, London, UK.

Application deadline: November 1, 2025
The Getty Conservation Institute
<https://www.getty.edu/conservation-institute/>'s (GCI) Postdoctoral Fellowship
in Conservation Science
<https://www.getty.edu/projects/postdoctoral-fellowship-conservation-science/>
is a two-year program designed to provide recent PhDs with experience in
chemistry and other physical or material sciences with experience in
conservation science. The 2026-2028 Postdoctoral Fellow will be an integral
part of the GCI Science's Materials Characterization
<https://www.getty.edu/conservation-institute/science/materials-characterization/>
research group studying the diverse range of organic materials in cultural
heritage.
Major Job Responsibilities
The Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to engage in new and existing projects and
research partnerships concerned with characterizing organic materials,
primarily paints and plastics. An important part of the research will be
developing analytical protocols and advanced data evaluation methods that can
benefit other researchers in the field. Information from this research will aid
in developing conservation treatment strategies and in technical art history
studies. The applied nature of this work means that the Fellow will collaborate
closely with researchers from other institutions and practicing conservators.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Applicants should have a recent (2020 or later) PhD in materials science or
another relevant physical science, plus experimental research experience,
strong instrumental analysis skills, and application of advanced data analysis
tools to chromatographic data. Demonstrated proficiency in pyrolysis-gas
chromatography/mass spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography, and ion
chromatography is highly desirable. An aptitude for self-directed learning and
for working across academic disciplines is desirable, as are excellent written
and verbal communication skills. Candidates should have an interest in the
visual arts and a serious interest in pursuing a career in conservation
science.
The Fellowship runs from September 2026 to August 2028. In addition to an
annual stipend and health insurance, the fellow will be provided an annual
study trip allowance and other generous benefits including an apartment at
Scholar Housing, a 38-unit complex located less than 2 miles (approximately 3
kilometers) from the main entrance to the Getty Center.
HOW TO APPLY: Interested candidates must apply online
<https://jobs-getty.icims.com/jobs/4672/gci-postdoctoral-fellow-in-conservation-science/job>.
Please be prepared to upload a Statement of Interest; Doctoral Dissertation
Plan or Abstract; Curriculum Vitae; Writing Sample; and Confirmation of Degree
as a single PDF when prompted to upload your "resume" by the online application
system. Candidates who successfully complete the online application process
will receive an automated message via email.
Additionally, two confidential letters of recommendation must be sent
separately to [email protected] <[email protected]> and should also be
received no later than November 1, 2025.

Getty is committed to creating a welcoming workplace that reflects the various
backgrounds of the communities we serve. We value differences in the pursuit of
inquiry and knowledge, mutual understanding, respect, trust, transparency, and
cooperation. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment
without regard to age, ancestry, citizenship or immigration status, color,
disability, ethnicity, familial status, gender identity and/or expression,
genetic information, marital status, national origin, race, religion, sex,
sexual orientation, veteran status, or any other protected status.
