Subject: Summer Internship in Archaeological Conservation, Crete, Greece
Message: Archaeological Conservation Internship on the island of Crete, Greece:

The Institute for Aegean Prehistory Study Center for East Crete (INSTAP SCEC)
invites applicants for a summer internship in archaeological conservation.

INSTAP SCEC was established as a non-profit organization (501K) in the United
States. It supports the research and publication of Cretan archaeological
material by Greek and international archaeologists. The Study Center offers
interns a chance to meet students and experts in a variety of fields from many
different universities. It has an excellent library and is a good base for
exploring the archaeology of Crete.

The conservation team works on recently excavated archaeological material in a
well-equipped modern conservation laboratory. Interns participate fully in the
work of the lab including examination and analysis of artifacts, cleaning and
reconstruction, and full documentation and photography, as well as discussion
with materials specialists. In 2026 there will be limited opportunities to
spend time on-site as part of an archaeological team since most excavations
will conduct study seasons rather than archaeological fieldwork, and the
conservation process will be entirely focused on the reconstruction of
prehistoric ceramics.

The position is not paid, but thanks to a generous donor there is a grant of
$3,000 which is intended to cover the cost of housing as well as travel to
Crete.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from, a
graduate-level or equivalent conservation program. Ideal candidates will be
proficient in written and spoken English. Preference will be given to interns
with experience in archaeology.

The 4 week internship will be undertaken between May 11th and August 1st.
Applicants must indicate their preferred time frame in the application.
Successful candidates are required to obtain their own medical insurance for
the duration of the internship. They are also required to submit a written
report at the close of the internship.

To apply: send a curriculum vitae, a letter of reference and a cover letter to
Elizabeth Shank ([email protected] <[email protected]>).
Applications are due by January 31, 2026.

For further information contact: Kathy Hall, Senior Conservator
([email protected] <[email protected]>).

A reminder that Ask a Conservator Day
<https://community.culturalheritage.org/events/ask-a-conservator-day> is coming
up on Tuesday, November 4! It's not too late to plan to participate: there are
lots of ways to join in, depending on your bandwidth. You could write a short
social media or blog post, reshare posts from participants, or plan lunch with
colleagues at your institution, for example. We also encourage participation on
any of the days surrounding Ask a Conservator Day if the 4th doesn't work for
you.

This year's theme is "Who Are the People in Your Neighborhood?" In addition to
answering questions you commonly receive about your work (or that you may
solicit from friends, colleagues, social media followers, or clients), we're
encouraging participants to share experiences working with colleagues in all
kinds of jobs, who bring all kinds of expertise to the care of collections and
cultural heritage. Surprising connections, shared skill sets, a chance to sing
the praises of your favorite collaboration partners: we welcome all of it!

Please tag AIC's social media
<https://community.culturalheritage.org/conservation-at-work/advance/what-is-conservation/conservation-in-social-media>
in your posts, message them to us, or email FAIC's Outreach Manager Katelin
