Subject: Need help identifying water damage on paper
 Message: Hello colleagues,

As I'm not specializing in the field of paper conservation, I need the
community's help once more for something I'm currently unsure about.

While examining a book with visible water damage, I noticed some marks on the
pages that I can't confidently identify. I'm not sure whether they are mould
stains, water staining, or perhaps ink that has dissolved due to water expose.

I've attached some images for reference and would greatly appreciate any
insights or guidance on how to tell the difference between these causes. Thank
you again for your help and expertise!

Subject: Survey on the filling of losses on leather objects
 Message:
Dear all,

I am writing to invite you to participate in a brief survey that forms part of
my PhD research in book conservation. The aim of this survey is to document
current practices in the treatment of leather objects, specifically focusing on
the filling of losses, regardless of the type of object or the respondent's
specialty. Whether you are involved in book conservation, textile conservation,
objects conservation, or other areas of leather conservation, your insight is
invaluable.

The survey seeks to gain a deeper understanding of the methods, materials, and
decision-making processes used when filling losses on leather objects. By
identifying common approaches, as well as the challenges and constraints faced
by conservators, this study will help establish a comprehensive frame of
reference for these treatments.

Your participation will contribute to a better understanding of current
practices and help shape future approaches to leather conservation. All
responses are anonymous and will be handled with strict confidentiality. The
data will be used exclusively for the purposes of this PhD research and related
academic or professional studies.

If you are interested in contributing, you can access the survey via the links
below, in English or in French. The survey will take approximately 6 minutes to
complete. Answers can be submitted in English, French or German.

 Message:
Call for Proposals – SERCA 2026 Annual Conference
Theme: Out-of-the-Box!
The Use of Non-Traditional Methods, Materials, and Practices in the Care and
Preservation of Cultural Heritage

Dates: Thursday, February 27th – Sunday, March 1st, 2026

Location: Cherokee, North Carolina

The Southeastern Regional Conservation Association (SERCA) is thrilled to
announce our annual conference, taking place this year in the stunning
Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina!

We invite innovative, thought-provoking, and dynamic proposals for
presentations that explore creative approaches to conservation. This year’s
theme, Out-of-the-Box!, celebrates the bold, the experimental, and the
unconventional—methods, materials, and practices that push beyond traditional
models of care and preservation.

Laura Elliff Cruz, Head of Collections at the School for Advanced Research
(SAR) Indian Arts Research Center (IARC)is the keynote speaker for our annual
conference. She will provide a virtual presentation on the Indigenous
Collections Care (ICC) Guide. This framework honors Indigenous belief systems
and practices, centering Tribal sovereignty and intellectual authority over
cultural heritage.

We welcome proposals on a wide range of topics—whether rooted in Indigenous
practices, experimental conservation treatments, experimental techniques, or
imaginative uses of nontraditional materials. Presentations do not need to be
directly related to Indigenous collections to be considered; all ideas that
challenge the status quo and inspire fresh thinking are encouraged!

Join us as we gather in the heart of the Appalachians to share knowledge, spark
conversation, and reimagine the future of cultural heritage preservation.

Proposal submissions are due by November 7th, 2025. SERCA will notify
presenters if their presentation has been selected by November 30th, 2025.
Don't miss the opportunity to be a part of this dynamic event and to share your
knowledge with colleagues from across the region.

To submit a proposal, please complete the Submit a Proposal Form.

Welcome! You are invited to join a webinar: From Conservation to Preservation:
Making Data Meaningful for Sustainable Collection Care. After registering, you

Overview: Environmental monitoring plays a crucial role in caring for
collections, but gathering data is only the first step. What really matters is
how that information is used. Too often, valuable data sits unused or is
interpreted inconsistently, making it hard to turn insights into action.
