Subject: New Scholarship Opportunity for Imaging and Scientific Research
 Message:
The Foundation for Advancement in Conservation (FAIC) is excited to announce
the Debora D. Mayer Imaging and Scientific Research Scholarship, which will be
accepting applications for the first time this year, with an annual deadline of
September 15. Debora Mayer has generously donated funds to support the
professional development of AIC members within the broad field of imaging
sciences. These scholarships offer an opportunity to experience various
techniques such as technical imaging (multispectral or hyperspectral), X-ray
fluorescence spectroscopy, other types of spectroscopy, data gathering and
visualization, and other techniques with the goal of pairing and integrating
different modalities to obtain a fuller understanding of the material.

Scholarships support educational experiences, including attendance to
professional development workshops, travel to a facility for hands-on
experience and training, or the analysis of an item at a facility in which the
applicant participates and collaborates in the analysis. Funds may be used to
defray costs associated with introducing the applicant to or building their
skill in the field of non-invasive materials analysis. Opportunities should
focus on employing complementary techniques that combine imaging and chemical
analysis.

Debora Mayer is the Conservator for Analytical Services and Technical Imaging
at the Weissman Preservation Center at Harvard University. She is an AIC Fellow
and received the 2025 AIC Robert L. Feller Lifetime Achievement Award for her
work in microscopy, research, publication, and mentoring. Additionally, she has
served in AIC's Book and Paper Group, Photographic Materials Group, and
Education and Training Committee. Debora is an expert in the analysis of
materials used in paper making and teaches courses in fiber microscopy. She
holds an MS in Conservation from Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in
Art Conservation.

 Message: Dear Ellen,
Apologies for the delay in response; I needed to check with the organisers.
I have their response now.
The launch in the London venue is in-person only.
The arrangements for the Oxford launch might include a recording which, if
it takes place, will be made available later.
There is no online event for either launch.
   Best wishes,
   Morwenna

Thank you for your work. Is virtual attendance at either book launch possible?

Book Launch: Art Restoration Under the Nazi Regime: Revelation and
Concealment.
This book is the first in-depth study of the restoration and conservation
field in the National Socialist era. It presents a completely new perspective
on the physical manipulation of fine, applied arts and other cultural property,
under the regime from 1933 to post war in 1948. It investigates the
motivations behind the participation of the conservation and restoration
profession in this network of profit, crime, persecution and ideological
broadcast.
The book is being launched next month at two events (London and Oxford).
All welcome. Please see the events below for registration and (free)
ticketing.

ABOUT THE WALTERS ART MUSEUM

The Walters Art Museum is among Americas most distinctive museums, forging
connections between people and art from cultures around the world and spanning
seven millennia. Located in Baltimore's Mount Vernon neighborhood, the Walters
is free for all. The museum's campus includes five historic buildings and
36,000 art objects.

Today, the Walters serves Baltimore and Maryland by embracing its role as
educator and storyteller, using the collection as a vehicle of knowledge and
cultural expression to support learning, dialogue, and community engagement.
The museum is committed to public education, offering essential programs that
help people to connect art to their lives. The Walters Visitor Promise aligns
staff and volunteers across the museum to preserve and share the works in our
care for future generations, partner with communities, and create welcoming,
accessible experiences for visitors. The museum offers challenging and creative
work opportunities by promoting collaboration and teamwork.

OVERVIEW OF ROLE

The museum is offering a two-year Andrew W. Mellon Advanced Training Fellowship
in Objects Conservation beginning fall of 2026.  The fellow will join the
Department of Conservation, Collections and Technical Research, a dynamic team
of museum professionals with a shared focus on the preservation, study, and
installation of the Walters Collection. The conservation team includes
specialists in books, objects, paintings, and preventive conservation, as well
as conservation science.

The fellowship provides in-depth training and research opportunities to a
candidate at the post-graduate level specializing in objects conservation.
Reporting to the Managing Head of Conservation and Technical Research, the
fellow will work as a full member of an active department that focuses on
treatment, research, preventative care and public outreach with a commitment to
participation in professional activities. As a member of the department, the
fellow will also work within a larger team of professionals in collections
management, exhibitions, and installation and production to gain experience and
exposure to the comprehensive nature of a conservator's role in a museum
setting.

The fellow will gain experience working on the museum's diverse collection
dating from 5,000 BCE to the 21st century. Approximately half their time will
be devoted to working with staff on the museum's programmatic priorities,
including activities relating to exhibitions, installations, loans and
preventive care of the permanent collections, as well as public outreach
through the museum's public "Conservation Window."  The remaining time the
Fellow will focus on an in-depth research project, culminating in a publishable
paper with full access to the resources and expertise of the museum's science
lab and scientist.
