Subject: Call for abstracts to all early carreer (Heritage) Scientists for the
Gordon Research Seminar 11-12 July 2026

Applications for this year's Gordon Research Seminar โ€“ Scientific Methods in
Cultural Heritage Research are open! The seminar takes place on 11 and 12 July
2026 in Les Diablerets (Switzerland). The deadline for abstracts to be
considered for an oral presentation is on the 5th of April.
This seminar is the perfect platform for young scientist in the beginning of
their career (graduate, PhD students, PostDocs or similar) in (cultural)
heritage science to present their work, discuss new methods, cutting edge
ideas, and pre-published data, as well as to build collaborative relationships
with their peers.

This year's seminar has the theme '

- Reassessing and expanding emerging analytical techniques to aid complex
issues in Heritage Science
- The use and sharing of samples/materials/mock-ups, data sharing practice and
the role of AI

technical art history and archaeology
- Connecting fundamental research with conservation practices

The GRS will also include a Keynote lecture by Aviva Burnstock, Professor of
Conservation at The Courtauld Institute of Art with a title: "๐˜ˆ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฅ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ

On Sunday, we will have a mentorship component " Practical Advice for Early
Career Scientists" with Marine Cotte, beamline scientists at ESRF Synchrotron,
and Laura Hendriks - SNSF Ambizione Fellow, as panel members. We are sure that
their experiences at different career stages will be inspirational for our
community to better dive into the challenge of we face : from applying for
beamtime to life after a post-doc.

We also encourage applicants to apply to the Gordon Research Conference that
starts immediately after the seminar (12-17 July), organized by Ilaria Bonaduce
and Samuel Webb.

Please note that limited funding is available for attending the GRS. Please get
in touch if you would like to be considered for this.

Subject: PhD Opportunity โ€“ Development of Macro-XRF analysis of 3D cultural
heritage objects
Message: The Faculty of Physics and Applied Computer Science at AGH University
of Krakรณw, in collaboration with the National Museum in Krakรณw, Laboratory of
Analysis and Non-Destructive Investigation of Heritage Objects (LANBOZ),
invites applications from highly motivated candidates for a PhD project to be
carried out within the framework of a doctoral scholarship competition at AGH
University.

Project description

The PhD research will focus on the development and optimization of macro-X-ray
fluorescence (Macro-XRF) analysis for three-dimensional cultural heritage
objects. The project addresses methodological challenges related to the
acquisition, processing, modeling, and interpretation of spatially resolved XRF
data from complex 3D geometries.

Cultural heritage objects such as polychrome sculptures and archaeological
artifacts present non-ideal, heterogeneous, and geometry-dependent systems that
require advanced physical modeling and computational approaches. The project
will treat these objects as real-world test cases for developing new analytical
and data-processing strategies.

Research topics may include (but are not limited to):

Macro-XRF data acquisition strategies for non-planar and complex surfaces
Correction methods related to geometry, self-absorption, and variable
excitation conditions
Spectral deconvolution and elemental mapping in 3D contexts
Integration of Macro-XRF data with 3D documentation techniques
Algorithm development for visualization and interpretation of large datasets

will outline the history and production of skin-based materials throughout the
ages exploring different types of leather and their material properties. We
will look at methods of identification, including species and tannage and
explore various deterioration phenomena through presentation, examination, and
analytical techniques. Principles of preventive conservation specific to
leather and related materials will be presented, including health and safety
concerns. This will be followed by practical sessions that are designed to
provide an opportunity for conservators to test a range of techniques and
materials which they may be able to utilise or adapt for future projects.
Practical
sessions include looking at cleaning materials and techniques, humidification,
stabilisation, and the use of various adhesives and repair materials suitable
for leather. Presentation of current discussions and techniques within the
field, such as the use of new analytical methods and nanotechnology, will
ensure students have an up-to-date understanding of the sector. Using a wide
range of examples, the course will provide an overview and basis for
understanding leather conservation and developing an appropriate methodology
for solving conservation problems, including interventive techniques and
materials.

The Icon Textile Group Spring Forum, to be held at the Whitworth Gallery in
Manchester, April 17 2026.ย  In person and on Zoom.

ย

The aim of this symposium is to discuss the past, present and future of textile
conservation in celebration of thirty-five years of the Icon Textile Group. As
the industry in the UK undergoes a generational turnover, how has the care and
conservation of textiles changed? How have the past 35 years informed current
practice? Where is the industry headed? How can we communicate the value of
textiles and textile conservation to both the wider heritage industry and to
the public to ensure that the textile conservation sector continues to grow and
'textile conservator' remains a viable career option?

Tickets are on sale now via ICON at this link:ย Icon Textile Group Spring Forum

Conservation and Its Ethics | May 13-14, 2026
 Message:

This two-day symposium explores the history and ethics of drawings
conservation, from early restoration methods to contemporary approaches in
professional practice. By examining how drawings have been repaired,
stabilized, and preserved over time, the sessions consider the evolving
standards of care and address ethical questions of intervention. They also
reflect on the role of material evidence in art-historical interpretation and
the changing responsibilities of artists, conservators, curators, and
collectors over a drawingโ€™s lifetime.

Co-organized by the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Rijksmuseum, the symposium
will feature presentations spanning four centuries of drawing from an
international slate of speakers.

We are looking for a source of custom-sized float glass in the UK to replace
damaged pieces we frequently use for a range of purposes in our book and paper
conservation studio. We'd like a minimum of 6mm thick glass in sizes ranging
from 150 x 50 mm to 700 x 100mmย with edges finished (polished? bevelled?) for
handling.

Does anyone have any suggestions of UK suppliers or advice on glass
