Hi all,

Has anyone analyzed the Artfix "C-series" ground? They claim they are
"lead-like" and conservation-grade but the formula is proprietary.
Any information greatly appreciated!

Best

Dear Elena,

One approach you may consider testing is the use of ultra-low-viscosity
cellulose ethers, applied either by ultrasonic misting or by another suitably
controlled method. In my research, I used ultra-low-viscosity HPMC at 2.3
mPa·s, which can be misted at relatively higher concentrations while still
producing a very fine, low-impact aerosol:

Because of its low molecular weight and low viscosity, ULV material may also
diffuse better into fragile or porous structures and could therefore help with
consolidation where penetration is needed.

For comparison, A4C is around 400 mPa·s, so the difference in viscosity is
substantial. Methocel grades around 4 mPa·s also exist and may be relevant for
this type of approach.

I have both ULV MC and ULV HPMC in my lab, and I would be happy to send you a
small sample if you are interested in testing it on mock-ups.

Best regards,
Tomas

Dear all,

My name is Elena, and I am currently working on my master's thesis on the
conservation of photographic materials.

During my practical work, I have come across several silver gelatin prints with
very fragile, powdery emulsions. While researching appropriate treatments, I
found that Klucel G (2–5% in ethanol) can be used as a consolidant.

However, I was wondering whether anyone has encountered a similar issue and
could share their experience or preferred treatment approach.

Thank you very much in advance for your time.

Best regards,
Elena
