Although rare in the United States outside of the Southwest, museum staff should be aware of the risks and how to address a rodent infestation on collections, in collections storage, in maintenance sheds, and on archaeological sites. I was trained in Hantavirus response in 2005 by the National Park Service in Tucson and I am always surprised that this rare but serious pathogen is unknown to my museum clients. If you have concerns, please contact me! I generally have to prepare a Hantavirus chapter for any collections assessment, Museum Housekeeping, or IPM report that I write and I am happy to discuss. Please see attached NPS Conserve O Gram 2/8 for reference.
