Subject: 2 June 16.00 BST Care of Collections Reading Group

The Care of Collections Reading Group explores and discusses open access
articles covering preservation, collection care and collection wide
conservation such as environmental monitoring, risk management, collection
moves, etc. This activity provides an accountability partner for reading
through the new or established research as a method of keeping our awareness
high.**

The group meets the first Tuesday, every two months for an hour of discussion
16.00 BST.
All are welcome to attend –though if you haven't read the book/journal/article,
you won't miss any spoilers: degradation, embrittlement, climate change!

**2 June, 2026 via Zoom.

**Session reading choices are:

 Subject: Hantavirus
 Message:
Reports in the news about Hantavirus should reinvigorate our conversations
about Heath and Human Safety in Museum Collections Care. Although rare in the
United States outside of the Southwest, museum staff should be aware of the
risks and how to address a rodent infestation on collections, in collections
storage, in maintenance sheds, and on archaeological sites.

I was trained in Hantavirus response in 2005 by the National Park Service in
Tucson and I am always surprised that this rare but serious pathogen is unknown
to my museum clients. If you have concerns, please contact me! I generally have
to prepare a Hantavirus chapter for any collections assessment, Museum
Housekeeping, or IPM report that I write and I am happy to discuss. Please see
attached NPS Conserve O Gram 2/8 for reference.
