I am pretty sure Hugh Phibbs provided information about using magnets back a
number of years ago.

My concern mostly was not the magnets used, but the strength of them when the
magnets needed to be removed, I always felt that was a danger spot in the
process, to overcome that I used small sheets of archival polyester (aka Mylar)
or small sheets of Tyvek that were bigger than the magnets, which gave me some
leverage to remove the magnets without damaging the art piece...

Best of luck with the project.

Hello,

We have a 12x8 foot paper poster mounted on canvas. The goal is to digitize and
then roll it for storage. We're considering hanging it for just long enough to
get good images of it. It's been lying on top of shelves for as long as I've
been alive, and we have no idea what the condition will be when it comes down.
Does anyone have a rule of thumb of the weight magnets could hold, or do you
have other ideas for how to hang it?

Thanks,

Heather

Heather,
Without knowing the strength of the paper support, magnets may not be my first
choice for hanging the poster.
consider grip-a-strip display rails, one or more units in-line. You can
distribute the weight over the entire length of the poster and safely unfurl
the roll.
You can use magnets to weight the bottom if it curls.

Good luck

IAQ 2027: CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

The IAQ conference series (http://IAQ.dk <http://IAQ.dk>) invites abstracts for
the 17th International Conference on Indoor Air Quality in Heritage and
Historic Environments (IAQ 2027), to be held in Copenhagen on 16-17 March 2027
and organized by the Royal Danish Academy, Institute of Conservation.

The conference provides an interdisciplinary forum for discussions on the
influence of indoor air quality on heritage collections and historic interiors,
including museums, libraries, archives, historic houses, and churches and
other places of worship. We welcome contributions addressing indoor air quality
topics such as pollution monitoring and modelling, preventive conservation
strategies, impact of and testing for material emissions, sustainable climate
and pollution control, risk assessment, energy-efficient building
refurbishment, and innovative analytical or mitigation approaches. Practical
case studies and experiences from collection care, exhibition design, storage
environments, and historic buildings are particularly encouraged.

The IAQ conference series traditionally brings together conservators,
conservation scientists, curators, engineers, architects, collection managers,
students, and other professionals engaged in the preservation of cultural
heritage. Contributions for oral presentations and posters are invited. Please
note abstract submission deadline: October 1st, 2026.

Further information about the conference, and abstract submission details, are
available at https://iaq.dk/2027.htm <https://iaq.dk/2027.htm> where material
from previous conferences can also be found.
