 Message:
Dear colleagues in conservation and restoration,

We are delighted to draw your attention to a new release which is specifically
of interest to curators and conservators-restorers.

KONSERVATIV-e, 3rd edition (2026)

What would once have appeared in three thick volumes now fits onto a single USB
stick: this comprehensive and critical German-English dictionary for cultural
heritage proves especially useful when AI delivers translations that are fast
but incorrect.

It provides 3,586 pages (A4 format) for lightning-fast lookups.

As of June 1, 2026, you can search through approximately 864,357 words. A
helpful 20,151 cross-references and annotations-along with 6,018 "false
friends" (incorrect entries found in other dictionaries)-offer invaluable
insights and expand your personal vocabulary along the way.

KONSERVATIVe wasn't designed for ordering pizza. Its subject areas includes:

archaeology,

art history,

ethnology,

Byzantine and Islamic art history,

religion,

Greek and Roman iconology,

Christian iconography,

conservation/restoration,

museum technology,

provenance research,

archival materials,

books and paper,

fashion and textiles,

brooches/fibulae,

arms and armor,

minerals,

historical tools and techniques,

roof and wall tiles,

synthetic and natural pigments,

metallurgy,

substitute materials,

pests,

chemicals,

essential scientific, legal, and commercial terms, and much more.

Taking a critical approach to terminology, the dictionary accounts for
historical terms, old and new spelling conventions (including Swiss standards),
and regional variations. This technical dictionary is the result of years of
work involving numerous contributors-and was created entirely without the use
of AI.

Hello,

I am currently a first-year Master's student in Cultural Heritage Conservation
and Restoration, specializing in sculpted works, at ESAD TALM in Tours, France.
I am contacting you in connection with my master's thesis, which focuses on the
study and conservation-restoration of a wooden and mother-of-pearl pagoda model.
I have very little information about its history and origin. My working
hypothesis is that it was made in China during the first half of the 19th
century, with the intention of being sold on the European market.

Are you aware of any studies, publications, or resources on this type of object
that I could consult? In addition, I am also interested in research concerning
the chemical and physical properties of mother-of-pearl.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Possessing unique knowledge in this area, Professor Koob was retired from the

practical workshop,

Wednesday 23rd September 2026.

Modern 1, National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh

Bookings will soon go live for this workshop.

Description

This full day workshop will provide participants with practical experience on
three iterations of the microfading tester (MFT) instrument commonly in use

dedicated to gaining hands-on experience with the Whitmore MFT, Retroreflective
MFT, and Fotonowy MFT. Attendees will have three c. 90-minute practical
sessions, one on each instrument, and will work in small groups with expert
instructors to begin learning how to operate the instrument (including
assessing the light source, establishing test parameters, focusing the light
spot, choosing test locations and conducting the tests). Information will also
be shared on the acquisition, assembly, portability, and maintenance of each
instrument. The workshop will include group discussion of general MFT concepts
and case studies, and a Q&A.

Lunch will be provided.

The workshop is organized by the Microfading Tester International Discussion
